I see several people have been taking pictures all over the globe. I was wondering how come that you people travel so much. Who of you travels for his work? Who travels just for fun and holidays? Tell me your stories if you like. I myself are basically stuck in this hole called Maassluis in The Netherlands. My holidays I spend mostly in other parts of Holland.

Well, I have 2 passions in liffe (besides my girlfriend) which can be combined perfectly, when you have the money to di so. I gues that's the poit where I'm lucky (to have an good job...)

Now, the 2 passions, you might ask: photography and.. travelling. I really love both and I'm willing not to spend any many other things to save money for these two. I have been saving money to go on a trip around the world for 8 months, that was 2 years ago. Now I'm back to normal, spending my 3 weeks of holidays abroad. For travelling, I have some rules of thumb: never to go to the same plcae twice. And there are lots of places to find, where not so many other tourists come, you just have to look, read and listen...this year in Brasil, I went to fantastic places and the amount of (foreign) tourists was incredibly low. I love that, it's what I live for. And I'm in the lucky position to be able top do so...

The same for me, I love travelling, architecture and photography. The funny thing is that this is an ideal combination while travelling, and a very good excuse to go somewhere. There are two ways to spend my holidays, first is to go somewhere far away for a few weeks, or go more frequent on short city trips around Europe. Flying in Europe is very cheap, so why wouldn't you? I am going to Rome in january for 60 Euros return incl all taxes, this is just a bit more than double the price of a train ticket from Rotterdam to Amsterdam. That is an easy choise for me :) There is just so much to explore on our Woophy world.

Thanks for your stories guys. It gave me some ideas, I mean, I'm not rich but even I can save 60 euro and travel through Europe for a few days per trip. I never thought about that but its within my budget. Even the thought about it cheers me up ;)

Hi HCvE,

I only travel in summer (july).

Greetz,

Nonkel Duvel

In dutch, much easier for me...

Hallo HCvE,

Ik reis alleen in de zomer, meestal in de maand juli. Dan alleen kunnen mijn vrouw en ik verlof krijgen. We hebben ook twee kleine kids wat veel reizen bemoeilijkt.

I have to work on saturday. Sometimes we "travel" to the "ardennen" or even Holland. We like Zeeland (Terneuzen, Middelburg, Veere, Zierikzee...). Yes, the grandmothers love the children but we can put the childrenthere every weekend.

A tip for brussels : you can visist the "market" around Brussels South (brussel Zuid) on sunday morning. It's a kind of world-market (even in nederlands : dit is een markt met allerlei kraampjes vanuit de hele wereld - Spanje, Griekenland, Turkije,... echt zeer gezellig)

We're creative. We "travel" around our village (max. 50 km.). So we went to Terneuzen this summer (see my pictures). A friend of mine exposed there a kind of statue. One question : do you have children ?

That's right, much people go to the USA, Indonesia,... but they don't know the places nearby.
My wife asks if your rats have a grandmother (I showed your card to my wife)... We also love animals, we've 3 cats. My parents look for them when we're tavelling away.

me and my wife simply like to travel - and of course my camera is always with me - not always to my wife's liking, since I can spend a lot of time in a place taking pictures when she wants to go somewhere else ;-) In addition we are lucky, that my mother in law lives in tuscany from spring til late fall, so visiting her is always a good - and cheap - way to get out of Germany ;-)

@HCvE: concerning travelling budget: with the low price airlines nowadays and cheap hostels, I think one can take a little trip somwhere easily. Just imagine, how much sometimes spends on a night in town ;-)

One member said something to the effect of people traveling to far off reaches without having poked around their own neighborhood. I agree that a person should first develope their credentials as an ambassador by knowing their home country very well first. I have been to 47 of the 50 United States and have lived in many of it's cities, so feel that when someone from another country asks me about home, I can give them an informed answer.
I hate to just go to a place and cram my experience into one or two weeks. I prefer to quit my job and just go until the money runs out or I find a way to add to the length of the trip by working small jobs along the way or bartering. My current employer offeres a very flexible vacation benefit so that in addition to the three weeks paid vacation, I can "bank" overtime hours for later use or just simply take time off without pay if project schedules allow. Two months of 2005 were spent on the road in 5 countries. It is a painful prospect to fly economy from central USA to Asia, so once I get there, I want to stay for a while.
Forget job security, your resume is useless in your next life. My grandchildren (none just yet) will much prefer to see my photos and hear my stories over hearing of how I did this or that to afford to get to these places.

We have a phrase in New Zealand, that was used to encourage tourism within our own country some years ago . . . "Don't leave town until you've seen the country!" There was a range of adverts on TV reminding us of all the travels opportunities that we overlooked. Sadly travel from way down here is expensive to get "up over there" (Europe and the States etc) but I try to take my camera with me most places and have some (beauty) (lucky) shots that are probably just as wonderful to someone who lives looking the Alps evry day, as those photos may look to me!
The great thing about this site is seeing such a collection of people, cultures, costumes, scenery and LIFE in places that are very different to 'home' mine or yours!

Yes, ET, you make the point stronger.
One of the things that I like about this site is that it is a good avenue for a less biased critique. When I ask for critique locally, people's critiques are usually stongly influenced heavily by the fact that the photo is taken in some "far off land" that is exotic to them and give me a favorable critique without consideration to the technique itself. I know that locally, what I lack in technique, I make up for in interesting subject matter. But then I place a photo here for viewing amoungst some well traveled folks and I get a more real opinion.
Another thing that I like (that I will have to improve on) are the shots that people have taken from there own locales. It adds greatly to my wish list of places to visit while showing me that I need to spend more time photographing the geographic area that I represent.
I just gotta love Woophy for showing me the way to be a better photographer.
