hi,
I am relatively new here and would like to get your opinion on an oberservation I made. Maybe it is linked to the contest and does not happen outside the contest.
I have observed on other picture-discussion sites that whenever it is possible to rank anonymously there are always a few people who for whatever reason tend to downgrade rankings of some pictures. Since their name is not displayed that is easily done. Here I had a few pics rated 5 with the first vote, suddenly 3 after the second (meaning the second was a 1). Not only for one, but for multiple pictures.
Please do not get me wrong, I do not believe my pics are especially outstanding, but the re-occurance made me wonder.
since a lot of people tend to vote and not comment, one is a bit left alone to the why and what could be done better.
I do not have a solution ready for that, still I believe that the fact, that the votings are anonymous plays a big part.
Did you observe similar behavior? What is your opinion on that?
cheers

Hi Mathias,

We had this discussion here before and we already changed the system so that you have to be logged in to rate (before everybody could do it)

Still the system is not perfect.

For the shortlist of the competition we only used pictures rated 3 times or more.

Also in our ranking system a picture rated with '1' is still higher then a not rated picture When you use the search tab to see the latest pictures on the site (which is really a nice way to browse all the pictures) even pictures rated a 2,71 float to the surface.

Anyway, we know the problem and are constantly trying to improve ..

best regards

Joris

hi joris,
thx for the reply :-) Actually my main focus was not on the contest or my pictures especially. It was just an observation I have come across on various sites and seem to find here again. I just mentioned the contest because maybe that situation was special and some seemed to feel more "competetive" than usual ;-)
I think you are doing a great job here and since I am really a newby, maybe I have rushed foreard too fast.

Hi Mathias and Joris,

I noticed the same so i did a test. I rated a few pics of mine with a five and... a few minutes later... a tree after the second vote ! You're right, the anonymous votes play a big part. I don't know the solution.

First I was disappointed but the rating isn't the most important for me now. i like it to share my pics with other people from so many other countries. Now i can make a journey around the world in 80 minutes instead off 80 days ! So, my congratulations to the Woophy people ! (please excuse me for my "bad" english, I hope you'll understand me...).

Can Woophy not have the names of the people that have voted for your photo? If everytime you vote and everyone can see who did it, then they will be more honest.

If you know the name of the people who rate, you can ask them why they give your picture (for example) a 2. So i agree with Trev J. New discussions on the net can begin...

This is why I am more interested in the opinions people write about my pictures ('comments'). When I was new on this site I also worried a bit about the ratings, but now I do not give a lot about a low rating without any comment. But you might be right about the competition on this site making people behave in a slightly competitive way...
I do not think winning prices is the right incentive to try to make nice pictures. I enjoy looking at the great pictures of others on Woophy and appreciate the comments of others, which can help me improve the qualitiy of my pictures. I think we'd better let them who are here with other incentives do whatever they like and enjoy Woophy in our own way ourselves!

right you are, comments are more important. maybe, since i am a newby, i have however not yet received comments with suggestions or critique, however some low ratings. that of course makes me want to know, what other people believe would have been the better solution for the picture ;-)

Yes, that is what I also want to know when I see a picture rated down. But I think those who rate 1 without telling why will have the competition-incentive mentioned above, so I decided not to worry about that any more.
