How about having a comparison-based rating system where you'd be shown another random photo in the same category and click on the one you prefer?
An example might explain this better, like this: http://kittenwar.com/

this kittenwar is addictive. :)
But I think it is difficult to compare pictures like that. There are hardly any pics on the same subject.

I have a bronze camera instead of a golden one! :) It's changed! Thank you Woophy for listening to your people! :) This is a first step.

Same as Big_Apple : I became a bronze instead of gold. Thanks to all of you. That's a wonderful improvement! Things are changing! Prepare for revolution!

I fully agree with the changing of ratings, thank God!
But i can feel some 'anger' at current woophy members when giving them a lower rating than before, because giving them a llower rating, some 'strike back' with downrating all my pictures (mostly with rating them all with a 1 ofcourse). For me that is not a real problem, because woophy is for me a medium to 'share' my pictures with others and not getting the highest ratings.
But for the one who downrated me, which again is 'partly' fair to me, please also read the comment, before giving a 1. I asked 'no voting please' for te picture below...........I hope you respect that!

wait a minute! why do you have a bronze camera Big_Apple and Nuxbal???
What happened???
@Graaf, the same happened to me just a few days ago, I had a pic that I would not have put on woophy normally, but I added it only for the forum and wrote: Don't rate, just for forum.
Someone gave me a 1...

@devish: the standards are raised. From now on it takes more to get a golden cam. We do not meet the standards. You obviously do, so congrats for that! ;)
@bunny: I don't see woophy as a contest so for me that's no problem to get a lower rating. Now I can destinguish the good from the lesser good photographers in this community and it gives me a goal to work towards.
@graaf: I don't rate pictures which are bad. It's more useful to give a constructive comment in such a case. But I only give 5 when I think that the picture belongs to the top category of pictures that I have seen on woophy. Besides: when a picture has a rating of 4,9 ;giving a 4 is also downrating. Maybe that's one of the reasons people are giving more and more 5. They don't want to pull down the average rating.

@Big_Apple: Thanks for explaining, do you happen to know what the new standards are???
And another thing, I fully agree with your opinion you just wrote, espetially on the not rating bad picture part, besidse, if I rate a bad picture it would anyhow end up in front of a normal pic that has not benn rated, and that's not right either, I think.

I suggest you look up a golden camera member and you go with your mouse over the golden camera, because I don't know it by heart and I'm in the middle of something :).

I fully agree with the comment(s) from Big_Apple and devish and I understand the amusement from www.imagografie.ch (moderator). I think a new the beginning has been made in 'rating land' which is absolutely positive.
But before the rest of the curent woophy members have accepted the 'real' 1-5 rating system, I think my (and other members from this forum) photo's will be downrated a lot, caushed by irritation.
That's the price I/we have to pay for this revolution, but that's OK to me.
I'm sorry for my bad English, hope you all understand what I mean?

I think those other members don't read this forum. At least I hope so. I have always found it annoying that you can't take a look at a user's pictures by clicking on his/her name on the forum, but now it might be useful :)

ok, if you wanna do it right with the ratings, then you have to rate EVERY SINGLE PICTURE on woophy! why? because it would not be fair to let anyone out of the ratings.
have fun rating all those pictures ;-)
btw, this is just my personnal opinion

Bunny I agree for 100%. It's impossible to rate all pictures that are posted on Woophy. So that already creates a "hair in the butter". And this topic is amusing because it repeats over and over again. But the new members don't read all the topics in Forum of course.
The current rating system at least gives some (rought) separation between the "bad" and the "ugly". As long as selfrating is not blocked most pxs start with a 5 without comments. Maybe this triggers some "corrective" measures by some of the Woophy's? Not always a 1 but e.g. a 3 or 4. Is there somebody that can comment on this statement?

I agree with pansa: rating your own pictures should be forbidden: it gives an advantage to the picture with a low number of ratings. Few people rate their own pictures with a low score.
I don't care either to have low ratings on my pictures, but I would like to have an efficient way to look for good pictures, and avoid having to view all the pictures on one subject to see the best ones.
We should be able to sort the pictures by the number of votes along with the average score.
And why not create an additional simple vote like "excellent photo", aside the normal rating. The pictures could be sorted by the number of such votes, and this would give a better idea of the really good pictures. Of course, it is difficult to implement, because it would create a double rating system, and people wouldn't use it. Maybe the rating could be limited to one such score.
And if the topic repeats over and over again, it may be because the rating system is not satisfying so far.

Yes, self-rating is unfair towards all the other woophy members in each and evrey part of it.
On the second method of rating I would add that probably people would start giving excellent photo too often, just like it is with 5's now.
One other thing that just came to my mind: part of the fault of the fact that we are not satisfied with finding the good pics is because people's ideas are different, so we might find many fives that we don't agree with, wich are not caused by over rating but just by different tastes. Obviously this isn't all, but it is just a further observation that came to my mind.

I didn't even think about self-rating?, if people do that, they simply don't understand it.
Further on, without starting over and over again about the rating issue, I can see the revolution has started, looking at the ratings given in the last few days....and of course a lot of F@$#! comments of people who do not understand a 1, 2 or 3 vote is given to themselves or other members, instead the regular 4 or 5!. But this misunderstanding is understandeble, because a lot of people don't read this topic, as already told by nuxbal, devish, pansa, etc, etc....

I see that this topic changed from too high rating to selfrating.
Is there anyone who can give me any proof that this is really happening??

I don't see why self-rating should be a problem. They can only rate a picture one time so it won't give them a bronze/silver/golden cam. And self-raters must be people who need it. And if you need it, that means that your pictures are no top quality. And that involves that they are no concurrention for good pics from honest woophy members. So those honest members shouldn't worry too much about those pathetic self-raters.
