I just stumbled across this site while searching for travel tips and photo tips. I'm leaving for China in a week and can't wait. This site is awesome!!!
The only problem I have is that I seem to find alot of personal photos... photos people take of their cats or kids or just general stuff that isn't really related to the theme of the site. Is this normal or should this stuff be reported. I love that this is all about travel and cultures but do I need to see a photo of someones favorite black cat or their child's hand? Not really. Do I sound like a jerk? I don't mean to. I just think it would be defeating the purpose of the site if people start posting misc photos. That's what deviantart and photobucket are for.

David, You'll either get lots of answers to this, or hardly any. Woophy is a little like the world--it takes all kinds. There are some of us who would like more limited kinds of pix and others of us who wouldn't. The mission is pretty broad (from the Terms of Use, which if you haven't read, you'll want to ):
\# Woophy.com was founded to collect pictures of our world, meaning landscapes, cityscapes, people, products or customs and so on. Use woophy.com as a platform to share your pictures of our world. Don't put irrelevant pictures online.#
Hang out and see if you like what you experience. A lot of friendly, knowledgeable and generous people here. And lots of travelers, but also people who stay home and share their particular corner of the world which may be far away from yours!

in addition to scarlet's thoughts: if woophy is here to show a picture of the world, don't personal pictures like pets, even artistic pictures aso belong to that as well? you never learn anything from a picture book about the country but by meeting its people. in this case people's thoughts and feelings expressed by their pictures - whichever way they choose ;-)
[edit] afterthought:
however, i can see your point when looking for a place and finding pets instead of scenery. but as scarlet wrote: you'll get very different opinions to that and especially: who decides if a pic belongs to the concept or not? e.g.: is a macro of a bee irrelevant or does it show the local wildlife? or a pet: one could argue that it shows that obviously people all over the world seem to like cats as pets (ok a weak argument, but one that might surface ;-)
i guess the best way to deal with it is: live and let live in this case.

@David
Have a good time in China and I am waiting to see the pictures that you bring back with you.
@ Woophy members
I have erased the original message and link because it seems to trigger a polymic discussion, which was not the purpose of it. Sorry for that. Best to my Woophy friends. BTW I like cats and dogs.

There's a simple solution to this, add a new category of photograph called "Personal" or "Could've been taken anywhere in the world".

@Dave, this idea is in my opinion a solution to this problem.
I said it before in this topic: http://www.woophy.com/forum/index.php?action=vthread&forum=2&topic=209 8
If you split pictures is category's then everybody who likes to see cat pictures can see them. And then the world map pictures become a more interesting place to see other places of the world.

Alternatively, the Woophy designers should create a fictious island somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic and everyone who posts pictures of pets and other geographically irrelevant photos could put them on this island. It could be called the Island of Limbo, a place for photos that don't really belong anywhere.

taking into account being blamed to be the devil's advocate: who and where does one draw the line between geographically relevant and irrelevant?

Although I understand the remarks here, I don't think it's a good idea. While I like to take pictures of mountains whenever I can, my neighbor maybe likes to take pictures of her dog on a windy beach. It's going to be very difficult to make a distinction what is good and what not. I don't want to be the judge for those people's opinion.
But agree, seven pictures of a cat in various positions in not where Whoophy is about.

e.g.: is this a geographically relevant picture?
could be almost anywhere along northern european coasts.
there are many more with people, situations, animals and even landscapes, that could basically be anywhere in the world.

geography related
but again: what is geographically related? do we want to limit that to wide-angle land- and cityscapes? take even a look at the contest like "work pictures". some of those coud have been made in a million places but they tell us alot about the county i believe. i would not want to be the one deciding that.

@ matz.........your picture could been taken anywere in the world as you say so yourself....but this kind of pictures show us very clear that there can be beauty in the most little common things, and don't we live, inspite of everything, in a beautifull world???
And I think thats whats woophy ALSO about.
But I agree, 7 pictures of a cat in different angles ...nah, no really need for..

Perhaps geographically irrelevant wasn't the best choice of words.
The best judges of the photos posted here are the collective opinions of the woophy members. In the end, the rating system, whever people love it or loathe it, will separate the good from the 'average'. There are lots of different things that people look for in a good photo, be it technical skill or for the emotion conveyed in the picture. Over time I'd say that a photo of someone's cat would eventually get quite a low average rating.

i agree with the "cat"-example. as has been discussed before and i believe it was ortho who brought it up: an upload limit like a pic a day or 5 pics a week or whatever might lead people to be more selective about what they upload.

Censorship.... brrrrr.
Remember, if you want nice pictures, geography related, go to your travel agent and get a brochure. I've seen portrait related pictures here with high ratings. Great. But are they of geographic value???
So... let our moderators decide what direction to go. In the mean time, let me enjoy beautiful pictures. Whatever it's a cay in seven positions (what I will skip after number one) or some great scenery shots (what I will skip after the third photo).
Choices... choices. In what kind of world do we live?

Pansa said: There has been earlier a discussion on the cats and dogs pictures on this site as I found out by going through old topics. Check out this link and you will learn a lot on the mindset of a number of Woophy members.

@Carla... I didn't know this but reading and searching gave me the next result...
And what about this very geographical image...
Both are very nice pictures but... dear Carla, it proves your point.
Ps, I have over 25.000 pictures on my harddisk and CD's/DVD and around 60 on Whoophy. I understand very well that what's good for me might not be of no interest for the Whoophy community. But... that's my own choice! As it should be.
