Dear Woophy-moderators and -members,

A few weeks ago I 'discovered' the world of Woophy. As a young photographer I like to get comments on my pictures to improve quality. I also like to share my pictures with others, so Woophy is a great site for me! I thank everyone for the comments on my pictures so far!
But there is one thing I would like to discuss. The ratings are quite imporant in the Woophy-community; ,,the shortlist for the jury [of the picture contest] will be assembled from the highest rated pictures on the site" and I read there are prices for the highest rated picture of the month.
However, there are Woophy-users that rate a picture 1. This is something I see quite often, with some of my own pictures as well as with great pictures of others. I personally think there are (almost) no pictures that deserve this rating. Every picture means something to the photographer who took it. And often it shows how a certain place looks like (one of the objectives of Woophy).
An example: the picture beneath is one I took myself. It is maybe not my best picture ever, but there is a thought behind it and it shows what the Stubaier Alps look like.
So: will it probably be possible to reconsider the importance of ratings? And what do you think? Can a 1-rating be justified and by what?

Yours,

Roderick

Well Roderick thanks for your view,

We have this discussion all the time.

There are a few things we consider. First show only ratings when rated 5 times or more, Second, give every picture automatically a 3 to start with, And third make rating only possible for members when logged on. We haven’t decided which one we are going to use.

In the meanwhile we use the current rating system as indicator of quality but not as proof of quality.

We awarded the last two months high rated pictures but it may very well be that next time we reward people who uploaded a lot o pictures or are active forum members… We just don’t tell in advance what you have to do to win a T-shirt.

Also for the competition we use the rating system as one of the indicators but not as the only one.

The real bad thing about giving people a ‘1’ is that it often unjustified and puts people of…again we are thinking about that.

My last pictures also got rewarded a lot of ‘1’ s and of course this was absolutely incorrect

Has anyone provided any guidelines as to what each rating means, or what criteria to use when deciding an image's rating? I'm beginning to think that a number of people rate more based on subject matter (and how they feel about it) than on aspects such as composition, exposure, etc.

yes true sunsets score high ratings

I think it is a pity that good pictures of bad subjects like pollution urbanisation poverty disaster are less appreciated.

But apparently that is the taste of the average Woophy visitor. If you don’t like that please give counterweight by voting for the pictures You like

And that's just what I do. ;) And I hope others will also do so and give comments on my pictures from a technical point of view and not only for the photographer having been at the most beautiful places on earth.
Thanks a lot for your clear answer Joris. In my opinion a combination of 2 of your options can be a right solution: only show ratings of pictures rated five times or more combined with only rating by logged in menbers.

maybe one way of changing that is to not keep the ratings anonymous. i think it takes more guts to rate low for whatever reason if your name appears next to the number.
moreover it would give the photographer a chance, to get into contact with that person to ask the always important question "why".
of course i do see some possible dangers as to "revenge ratings". a different forum i am in tries the following: for a certain period of time (could also be a number of ratings), the name of the photographer is anonymous, so you can't downgrade your "personal enemy". the ratings however show the name of who rated.
ratings made after the anonymous period are displayed in a different color, so you can see the differences in rating behavior during and after the anonymous period.
i realize you don not want to copy, still the idea i think is something one could discuss.
cheers

From Matz post I have a question. If one member wanted to contact another member privately, how would they go about doing this.
I am also a member of a sitar player's forum that offers private messaging by the forum so that one member can contact the other member without actually knowing the e-mail address. That person can then simply reply by the same method or give the person their contact information so that they can get in touch directly.
