Ortho. That is certainly a big question : how to identify the " best pics " ! Most of my Woophy Day friends seem to agree - as I do - that Rating ( even, perhaps, a better system ) is not the way. I have argued, in other Forums, that Comments are of very limited assistance. Maybe it's a cop out, but - because of the difficulties associated with attempting to apply objective judgments to subjective topics - leads me to ask : " Why identify the ' best pics' at all ? " All Woophy members interested in photography ( as opposed to those mis-using the site as a kind of electronic family album, where every picture they take is uploaded ) know the kinds of image they admire. Surely we're sensible enough not to need some system ( which, as already suggested, is likely to be flawed ) informing us : " Look, this is a good picture ".

And that's my last word ! I get so bored by these endless circular discussions about ratings or comments or some other issue to which there is no easy answer.

Geoff,
of course I know what is a good photo for me, but what I want, is a system that helps me to find them more easily than having to search through hundreds of pics, so that I get bored after having discarded tens of pics of Santorini (just an example), and I certainly miss a few good ones.

Hello...
Some people may like the rating as it is, "not my case" I will sugest leave the rating sistem but add the possibility of a gallery, to post only recomended pictures and limit the numbers of recommendation to one a day, so people will think twice before giving away his only daily vote

The rating system has been dysfunctional for at least the last one and a half years. This did not happen by design. It went its natural course.

No single issue has cost Woophy as many members as the rating system. It has become an endless source of disappointment, irritation and desperation.

Since it doesn't work, Woophy might as well get rid of it. There is no point kicking a dead horse.

The new rating system works fine IMO. It's not the system that is giving the problems, but the users of the system. You need some clue to sort the better from the worse pxs. The idea of the gallery is fine too, but who will make the selection? Just leave everything like it is and if you don't like ratings, don't look at them.

# Posted: 14 Sep 08 11:34

that is just my thought Pansa, I never look at ratings, not mine or others,so they don't bother me.

# Posted: 14 Sep 08 15:13

Pansa, if it's really the users we should get rid of them instead of the rating system. (Changing the users' behaviour is too ambitious a project: they are fully developed adults and it would be incredibly difficult to change them.) If you ask me, a better conclusion would be that the system is incompatible with the users.

Like Giz, I feel that the ratings are meaningless. I support the notion that the best way to live with them is to ignore them.

It has been like that for too long. The rating system has become a lost cause. I don't think any bromide can hide that.

Hi to everybody, I'm new concerning this theme. Nevertheless, I think the better solution is to rate the pictures in a scale that goes from 0 to 100... and up to 1000 may not be worse

# Posted: 14 Sep 08 19:07

It would be nice to introduce negative values: such as from -100 to +100 .

More seriously, I don't see the purpose the purpose of maintaining a rating system that most you claim to ignore.

Any official reaction to that?

Maybe replace the ratings with the number of comments that the pictures gets (excluding comments placed by the uploaders themselves).

And divide that number by the number of full months (+1) that the pictures have been on Woophy.

You then have something new to sort the pictures by.

It seems that the only way the ratings can be fair, is if they are done objectively by one person/machine. As the system stands, there is too much personal feelings being poured into rating a photo, and whilst the Love out there is great, it is not meeting the needs of fairness.

It would be too much for one person, so I therefore suggest we all club together and build a supercomputer capable of scanning each uploaded photo and rating it impassionately according strict criteria within its programming.

I think Ortho158 and others members like me, we suffer from boredom when we see the woophy site (VidarS open a forum discussion with this topic in the last days), I think that this is a consequence because the members of woophy do not use too much the qualifications of 1,2, since they were afraid of being accused of downraters. This paranoia has done of this site bored in my opinion, being honest this site was one of my favorites in the past.
I am not very popular at this site because in the past, said some comments supporting skills and critic commets supporting what some members consider a downrater, with a group of friends many of them members of the month but they have ceased to be members of this site by boredom and others things, trying to rate and criticize the images.
Whe are ignore irrelevant images (did not comment on any of them) and voted with a 1, because we believe that violate the Terms of Use, paragraph 2 .
I recomend use all the rating numbers, ignore the irrelevant images with 1 rating, give constructive comments if the picture deserve it, if you have a friend, friends or clubs in woophy and you want to help us dont give a simple -nice- or 5ves, say the bad things in his picture also, only in this way all of you can increase their knowledge, if they really care about photography.

A tip to see good pictures, is watching the favorites pictures of some good photographers.

If we would stop the ratings, we probably don't need contests.
But I think everybody likes comments and ratings and like to take part in contests, because in our hearts we probably still are children.
we can go back to the original intentions of the site, and just show the earth in pictures without rating and comments, but the site has evolved and has become what it is today. In away ratings and comments will give you more pleasure in photography because its an ego thing, and perhaps will give you more involvement on Woophy.
The thing about rating is, that the more we comment and rate other people, the more comments and ratings you get.
It would't be a bad thing if the ratingsystem would be extended, with things like the technical parts of the pic, which gives an average number to the pic, and will give the photographer more information on his technical scills concerning his pic

Perhaps in future new ideas will come from the memberscouncill (see newsletter).

But I don't mind having a ratingsystem or not

it won't hurt for once and i'll try to give my opinion ;
rather than a new rating system, i would be interested by a good traductor system that could allow me to post comments adapted to my thought.
although english use is the best (as others, i like to read others comments , and don't understand japanese language for example), i'm often stopped by my "frenchy english" and i'm afraid to be misunderstood or to put my foot in it
about rating, i don't use it since a long time but i think photography is more near from art than from mathematics; it's not "wrong" or "right"; so, difficult to give criterias or you would get only technical bad, good or excellent shots but without any soul !
greetings to all
brigitte

1. From you and IMO I see that you want fast access to good pics in the seas of uploaded photos. But what is good and what is bad is a matter of contention. I have been on the Woophy for only a few months but I feel that there are two main trends among Woophians, classical shot takers and those who put in more personal attitude and want to escape from what is 'ordinary' (whatever it is). Why not introduce a classification scheme like that while uploading your pic (you choose where to land with your pic). Those who think similarly take a look at your output consciously. The system would not exclude the possibility to belong in both categories (it would be up to you to decide!).
One more benefit: you could find your 'pearls' faster!
2. Rating is not bad. It's only how we use that matters. I have virtually never seen '4' on the Woophy. But I have seen comments without '5'. Why not adopt a clear rule that if you give '5' you accept the pic as it is and think it to be a 'pearl'. No '5' would suggest some kind of fault. Even if you don't give '5' you can always add a friendly critical remark. Woophy could indicate those '5s' below the pics but no scores if otherwise. Viewers could always have a look at the pics without scores and rate them if they wish.
3. IMO the system proposed would greatly increase the access time!

great suggestion Coffeejunkie, the best so far in my eyes. no rating and a gallery, where a picture can be suggested by a member and the members can vote "yes or no".

that way this community can return to exchanging opinions instead of ratings. still exceptional pics can be seen by a greater audience and are being "rewarded" so to speak.

there will never be a system that will be just right for everyone but the rating system has caused to much discussion and bad feelings already.

just my 2 cents

# Posted: 16 Sep 08 18:05

I like the Gallery Idea, but the problem is that there are hundreds of pictures downloaded every day and the really good ones may be lost inside them.
So how can we sort it out???

# Posted: 16 Sep 08 18:12

Tigreramon you just hit the nail on the head

First we have to find a way to stop this Tsunami of pictures and after that we can discuss how to rate (or not) the remaining ones.

# Posted: 16 Sep 08 18:40

Please don't try to limit the Woophy democracy! Don't try to establish bodies of those 'knowing' because sooner or later you will destroy one of the best ideas I've come across! Think about practical solutions and about ideology!

# Posted: 16 Sep 08 19:28

What is the the difference between no rating and most rated 5? I value the comments and I am afraid that without rating there will be less comments. I see that most people who do not want rating anymore do not belong to the regular commentators/raters!
Without raating/regular commenting woophy is just like any other site and .........
