Can we ban the word 'cute' as a response to pics? Its not helpful and is even a little dissmive. What do others think?

I don't find 'cute' offensive if used in its proper way. My dictionary describes it as clever sharp & neat but I always use it in a childishly precocious sense. Rove is cute, Kylie is cute, but Dame Joan Sutherland, never.

There is an endless list of words of praise which are not very helpful: excellent, beautiful, marvelous, great, nice, fine .... That's not a reason for banning them.

Even the word cute might be nice on some picture. It's not very helpful of course unless you wanted a picture to look cute, but if there is any special pictures that need our honest truth ask in the forum or below the picture. It works!

Agree with Vidar, but would like to add that alot of woophy members- English is not a first language and so small words of encouragement such as brilliant, great, fun and cute are an easy option. As Vidar said just upload your picture to the forum for critique. im English and my grammar and language is appalling

I agree,Jonny, since the majority of members isn't a native english speaker it is often difficult to express what you're feeling. By banning words to comment on pictures when English is not your native language people might get reluctant to comment at all. All kind of comments are welcome to me, even when the word "cute"is involved.

I agree with Ortho - banning a word because it may be mis-used, probably by someone whose English vocabulary may not be too extensive, is not an option . I also agree with jonny, that we should be tolerant of ( what we perceive to be ) others' " weaknesses ". Woophy is about helping and encouraging one another, rather than criticising them for their English usage . If anyone wants to call my pictures " cute ", that's fine with me : at least they've taken time to look at, and comment on, them ! And, of course, if the picture is rated 5, that's also OK !!!

... of course, it would be great, if all comments were long and witty like those by Vixstix! But it is always a pleasure to discover that somebody somewhere saw your pic and coldn't help saying even just a little word about it, so welcome you "cute" comments!

When I see a picture of a puppy or a kitten or other little ones I use the word < cute >, I don't know an other word, and it said exact what I mean.

Personally, this topic does not bother me, I mean every one is free and has enough intelligence as to say whatever he/she wants as a comment to somebody else's picture.
If you want an easy and simple solution, restrict the ammount of characters of comments to a minimum of fifty characters. This way every user would be bounded as to say only what he/se really thinks about your picture.

However I do understand your point of view Vix, i'm afraid your perception of the commenting box is a little wrong...
I don't suppose it is only ment to comment a pic in details with all its strengths and weaknesses. It is fine (another word wich fits in the same categorie as "cute") or even nice (damn again such a word ) if it is used for that purpose, but it is well used as well if it is merely used as some kind of guestbook; where people leave only a sign of appreciation or misappreciation.
@marcos your suggestion of a minimum limit of characters could be effective, but i can tell that pictures are or will be commented much less and/or there is a risk that when commented the comments exists out of characters like plusses, asterisks, points etc besides the words like "cute", "great", "beautiful", etc.

Oh one other thing;
It could be of some help if people add in their profiles wich languages they understand (as I am going to do right now ), that way comments can be given in a language wich the commentator is most able to use. You could of course also share your languages in each of your pictures keyword(description) box.

Yes, very nice, great picture, excellent, good job... I use this kind of comments, first of all because my English is not so good that I can express myself as I could in my native language, second because I just don’t know why I like the picture. I try to learn from other’s comments, see what they say and sometimes I’ve the feeling like this is exactly what I would like to say, but others can do it so much better….

Like TBM said "...but it is always a pleasure to discover that somebody somewhere saw your pic and coldn't help saying even just a little word about it, so welcome you "cute" comments!..."
I'm always happy when I get a comment, short or long, doesn't matter, just "cute" or with a lot of explanation....and to tell you the truth, I don't find those comments about good compo, great DOF,and excelent colours much more usefull than just a comon "beautiful".... All in all, they all make me feel apreciated ... My photo from last mont contest was described as "cute beyond compare", and I'm so proud becouse of that!!!!!

agree with lali... to be honest, i comment only pictures i like. all the others i would have to say what is 'wrong' with them or what could you do better i leave aside. if i would comment them too.. wow, that would be a 100%job! did you see how many pictures are uploaded everyday? and how many are just simple, not very special pictures? (i don't wanna be devalued, don't missunderstand me. english is not my motherlanguage either) when i look through and find a picture i like, then i take my time to express it with a comment. even if there is just a beautiful, awesome, cute, nice, or a simple i like it comment. i'm glad when i get a comment. even a short one. that means that the other member took his time to write and seems to like my picture. and i think the most of us like to see that others like our picture. this is nice right?
but if you wanna have only constructive, and critistical comment, then write it yourself in the comment, or in the description...

I also agree with Jonny. Language is a problem for most of the members including myself. To give a real good strong comment on a picture you have to write a good note. If you can't express yourself in english the comment can be misunderstood. I think that is a problem for the short comments. And better a short comment then no comment

Oscar
