While browsing through the forums, I have seen many posts mentioning quality and quantity of photos uploaded to Woophy. Although I can understand and appreciate the concerns of many photographers I thought Woophy was created to show the world's wonders, cultures and people. Not only am I very new to Woophy, I am not an expert photographer.

However, as I state in my profile, I am trying to improve, particularly composition and lighting. I am more than happy to take constructive criticism on a photo. However it concerns me that some members would like to see only the best photos uploaded to Woophy. I try not to upload very bad ones, and yet sometimes the subject of the photo I am uploading is more important to me than the quality. For instance, I uploaded a photo of a woman doing the limbo at a birthday party. The lighting is horrible, composition is not great. But, I posted it to show someone in some other part of the world what my friends, family and acquaintances do for fun. I would not want that to be the only representation of fun in a midwestern US , middleclass family, but it is a slice of life.

If I travel a lot, even if only in the US, how would I limit the number of photos I posted? I only have 35 now, but 500 could be very limited. I don't expect anyone to look at every one of my photos or to comment or vote on every one. Sure, I love a pat on the back as well as the next person. However, the golden camera is not my goal. There are other sites that focus on photographic technique and skill. That is why I have a smugmug account. My goal is to photodocument whatever I can. Personally, I like looking at photos by clicking on areas of the map that are far away from myself! I love the photos that show culture and tradition and people and landscape. I may never get to go to any of those places in person, but I can see them via Woophy! This is a reason why a description box would be so very nice. The photographer could explain the setting and photo.

Anyway, I have taken enough of your time. Thank you for reading and for any replies.

Hello Tess,

I agree with you that woophy is a perfect place to discover the world.
Surfing in woophy by going with my cursor over the map, and see whats interesting is one of my activities.
I have made a lot of pictures of my home town, wich has become a very little bit more famous because of my woophy activities.
So, I want to show you the place I live in, the people who are living there, etc. etc.
In the same way I like to discover the place were you live.
Doing all this, I try to improve my photographers qualities, and try to place better pictures every time.

I agree Tess. It doesn't matter if your photos aren't prize winners - the content is more important than the composition and technical excellence. Keep on shooting.

Mind you, there are some people who seem to have the time to upload just about everything they take - scanning thro such portfolios can be a bit boring. I do try to put on my more interesting ones (those that I think are bit special) irrespective of quality - hoping that people wil then be more inclined to view them.

Happy snapping!

Yes, I am trying to post my most interesting ones. Definitely not everything. For example, I have 4 or 5 photos posted of school lunch and recess, but I have another 100 or my hard drive. Those may be interesting to parents of each particular child, so I have a gallery on smugmug for parents to look for photos of their own child. I chose the ones I posted in order to catch the feel of this particular subject. Other subjects may only need one photo.

Tess,

I think you managed to make a small ( it is growing I hope? ) portfolio which shows some normal dailylife pictures of the USA, and thats whats woophy about...........

Tess. Hi. You've hit on one of the major dilemmas facing Woophy members : how many pictures to upload. Your comment ( " Definitely not everything " ) tells me that you've understood that there must be some, self-imposed, constraints on numbers, if other members are to have enough time to look properly at your pictures. In deciding which of my own pictures to upload, I look at them in light of guidelines given to me by a photographic mentor. He told me that pictures should -

a. Tell the viewer something new ;

b. Excite the eye ; and

c. Engage the mind.

As fotogravenswaay says - and I agree wholeheartedly - Woophy's aim is to enable amateur photographers to show their pictures which attempt to fulfill all three. I encourage you to continue trying to do the same !

Regards

Geoff. ( Geoffrey McElwaine )

Hi Tess,

Your comments strike a chord with my philosophy. I also try to show how some of the small coastal towns in my country of Wales look to the visitor, and also the attractions they can offer. Like Joopvandijk, I also surf the woophy map especially when a place is suddenly in the news. If Woophy's aims of displaying photographs of every city, town and village in the world is ever realised it will be because enthusiasts like you take the trouble to make it happen. There are a number of different photographip factions very active in Woophy who make the site the dynamic and lively place it is - there is plenty of room for the photodocumentor (I love that word) to practice their hobby.

Keep on snapping.
