Hi all!

I'm very fond of woophy, but I wish it was an easy way to show people that I want honest oppinions. I want to learn, but "nice" does'nt really tell me what is good with the picture. Even worse is the anonymous 1, 2 or 3 rating.

Maybe a choise of textline under the picture when uploading the picture saying something like this:

1: "This user wants your honest and constructive criticism"?
2: "This user wants your help to make this picture better"
3: "This user can't stand negative comments!" ;-)

I guess I gave myself an idea to allways add "I want your honest and constructive criticism" with every picture I upload. :-)

Best
Vidar S

You are right of course. There are photo sites where you can specify if you are interested in points (or not), in comments, ... And where you can specify, per photo, if you want an 'in-depth critique'. It would be nice if it was included in Woophy 2.

It would also be useful to those who give constructive criticisms to people who don't care a bit about them (or, worse, are offended).

Hi Ortho, and thank you very much for your comments and help!
I've changed the textline a bit. I'm now adding:

"Please feel free to give your honest and constructive criticism."

I promise to give my honest oppinion if the person want's me to do so, and for me, constructive criticism is an excellent way to get better.

About woophy 2. Is there an upgrade to woophy coming soon?

Hello Vidar, I think the major problem about the short comments is the time the most users have. If you are looking how much pictures are uploaded every day then you can't see them all. I really don't know how it is possible to look throught about 500 or 600 pictures a day and give them a good and usefull comment. I personally rate or comment the most beautiful pictures but I miss a lot of good pictures because of this problem.
An upload limit is solving this problem in my opinion. Less pictures means more time to look and comment them.
This issue is talked before and never solved, have a look:

Hi Oscar!

I agree with you. It would be impossible to give in-depth criticism of everyone that asks for it, but a message from the photographer to the viewers telling them that constructive criticism is apprisiated would at least open up for in-depth comments without the phographer getting insulted. I think some people are afraid to tell their honest oppinion. At least I am.

For me, most of my pictures are boring and lifeless, and it would help to get some hints on how to take better pictures.

But of course, Woophy is a place to show pictures from around the world, and not so much for the proffesional photgrapher.

I agree with you Vidar. Pictures that are not so good needs more and longer comments than pictures that are good themselves. In example, a picture that has a great compo, good colors and sharpness needs no more to say then "Good shot" or "amazing compo" and so on. The pictures that are not so good needs more critism and advise to improve each member. Just tell the member how to improve a picture or a composition.
But I prefer to look to the good pictures instead of the ugly picture.
If there aren't that much pictures uploaded everyday then we can maybe give good pictures good comments and give the ugly pictures the comments they needed.

And it is always good to discuss these things and to talk about.

I guess the best thing is to get to know each other. Know what the others prefer. :-)
I've added the textline, and I'll just have to wait and see if it's working. :-)

Vidar Hi. As you'll have gathered from reading the other Forum threads Oscar mentions, I share your concern. Another Forum thread you may find of interest is -

http://www.woophy.com/forum/index.php?action=vthread&topic=2378&forum= 2&page=-1

And yet another, more recent, one –

http://www.woophy.com/forum/index.php?action=vthread&forum=2&topic=291 4

Despite all these discussions, the uploaded numbers / comments & rating problems remain unresolved. I wish you luck with your text-line, and will be interested to hear whether is as successful as you hope !

Regards

Hi Geoffrey!
I've read through most of the links added in this part of the forum, and it's been very interesting! One question... Why on earth have'nt I used the forum more?
I'll make it my rule to check it everytime I'm on woophy.

Okay! Oscar, Ortho and Geoffrey!
Thank you all!
I guess this is the way to get attention to my pictures!

One thing that really impresses me is how you all come with constructive criticism without being even close to insulting me!
I've also looked through other parts of the forum, and this is how people in this place behave. It feels like everyone is friends.
Let me know if you come by Norway some time. I'll buy you a beer! :-)

Another suggestion for woophy: It should be possible not only to add favourites, but also friends.
Thank you, and have a great 2008!

Ps. I will keep the textline, and give you a report on this forum in a month.

Vidar. Glad to be of help. I enjoyed looking through your pictures : some were of places I know well. You may regret your kind offer of a beer ! I have a Norwegian wife, and we visit Norway regularly !

I find giving constructive criticism which does not insult quite difficult. It is, therefore, good to know that, in your case at least, you genuinely want an honest view.

Godt Nyttar !

Geoff.

No! I do not regret!
I'll be happy to buy you a beer!
Just let me know when you're going to visit Norway again. Somewhere not to far from Oslo would be nice!

Godt nyttar til deg ogsa!

Hi, Vidar.
I have come to think that a lot of what is best about woophy is the forums. There are always interesting discussions and tips.
Even if things that we don't like get resolved, at least it's good to talk, exchange opinions. And you're right, this has to be without insults or offence. Mature adults don't need that, it serves no purpose.
But still, I wish there could be some development on the constructive criticism versus ratings question. It's hard. I know that I tend to look at what appeals to me, rather than what doesn't. Human nature?

Hi, SJS
Agree with you, and I also tends to look at picture that interests me. Maybe a limit of uploaded pitures would do good.

Time for a report on my "Please feel free to give your honest and constructive criticism." !
Well. Not much happened exept from those who visited the forum, and of course from those of you that I have been talking to in this forum. Maybe a few more people gave a more "in depth" comment, but some people allways do.

Not much different. Anyway. It was worth a try. :-)

Again, thank's for your input!
Vidar
