Ratings ie secret raters who dont like commenting with it.
IVE BEEN SO TRYING NOT TO LET PEOPLE WHO HAVE A IQ OF 1 WHO CAN ONLY THINK ONE AND WHO ONLY RATE ONE NOT TO LET THEM BOTHER ME BUT I CANT TAKE IT NO MORE.
can woophy think about just scraping ratings as i know it upsets a lot of people even the ones who say it doesn't well i know it does.
i wouldn't mind but rating someones work that's took ages to get right with just a 1 and no comment is just down right rude and ignorant.
please woophy do something about the hard feeling in the rating issue either scrap it or make it mandatory you leave a comment with your rating thanks jonny

you can always send an email to me and if I discover some kind of malicousness I will act.
Please mind that it is holiday here and that I will not react before the beginning of January
Also a new system where the amount of rates is more important than the average rate will soon be implemented.

Maby they can take only the option to rate a "star" or something and comments.
So you can give a star when you like a picture and a message if you like.
Or when you dont like it you dont give a star and say why you dont like it.
Some pictures i've seen are so beautiful and then some one rate a 1 en you cant find it in the best rates.
I Like woophy verry much and i'm learning a lot from al the pic's from al the members
I think its sad that there are people how can not look to a picture were it is made for, but only see it for a competition.
Excuse me my bad english

I'm afraid the phenomenon of downraters will never finish. You can always find one jerk who takes a kick out of this downrating, believe me, I had my experience in the past.

I know it's frustrating, but let's wait and see what the new version will bring us and leave it till then.

Another site where I participate has a system rule that, any vote below average (5 being average), MUST be accompanied by a comment, otherwise the vote will not be registered. It might be something to look at, cause at that site, since the implementation, it has really filtered out a lot of malicious voting.

Jonny, well said! I couldn't agree more.
I would scrap the whole ratings system, just keep the comments, where people would be perfectly free to add a number, like we do anyway. But no scale. Also, the rating scale 1-5, in which we all know 5 = excellent, is weak when we have no objective definition for 2 to 4.
It is a little too easy for anonymous down-rating,which has to be the biggest downer on woophy, after "stealing" others' photos.
Joris, that change is one step in the right direction, but an awful lot of great photos still don't score in accordance with their quality, as they just get overlooked in the sheer quantity that we have to look at.

I totally agree with SJS that the total quantity of pics is much too high, to allow a decent evaluation of them. But I also would like to stress that an awful lot of average photos (just to be kind) get a rating that they don't deserve.

Just to illustrate the opinion of SJB and ortho158: at this moment there are uploaded 1008 pictures the last 24 hours. Some folks come with an upload of 50+ pictures a day.
When I enter the search button to look at the last two days (ratings) I see lots of fine pics I missed and I'm sure lots more will be unseen forever. Just take a look at the amount of views and the number of ratings some great pictures receive. Just compare that with the number of members.
So, ortho and SJB let's see if the new version will improve this otherwise lots of fine pictures will be snowed under the enormous amount of "average"pictures, to quote ortho.

Folks. Here we go again : the never-ending ratings / comments story ! I agree with Martin - let's wait for Woophy 2. I suspect, however, that the continuing high upload numbers will also overwhelm it ! It seems that there are two main kinds of uploaders -
a. Those, of whom I am one, who regard Woophy as an electronic Camera Club, where we take seriously the views of other members whose picture-making skill we respect as an aid to improve our own skill ; and
b. Those to whom Woophy seems to be little more than an electronic family album.
Thus while I only select the better pictures from each picture-taking session to upload, those in the second group upload everything they have taken, with no apparent effort to select the best, etc. This will surely continue after Woophy 2,
On Stewart and Jonny's point : Rating has value, in enabling members who cannot express themselves fully in English to register an opinion. I assume that this is why, in many of my pictures, the number of votes and the number of comments do not agree.
Enough talk ! Let us all continue to take pleasure in our Woophy membership at the level each feels most comfortable. And all enjoy fellowship with like-minded folk.
I wish every Woophy member a blessed 2008, with lots of opportunities to show each other the beautiful world in which we live.

Just reading your take, Geoff, on the value of the rating system. A great point. I hadn't thought of that, I mean its value to overcome language difficulties. It is valid, but the system still needs refinement. The best comments, for me, are those that say more than the one-word monsyllabic, which are undoubtedly mostly caused by simple lack of English lang. proficiency. I wouldn't blame anyone for not being fluent in English. Then many people just don't have the same ability to express themselves in writing as others. That isn't their fault. I am eternally, genuinely interested to know why people like, or don't like a photo. It is maybe worth considering that it is far more difficult to express a negative opinion without hurting or offending the photographer, even when the intention is totally constructive - again the language barrier doesn't help. Geoffrey is one of those few who, by nature, have this ability. It is perfectly possible to take his criticisms as absolutely well-intentioned and always constructive. Somehow, we can all simply sense that Geoff is a person who could not aim to hurt, even if he wanted to. So, a fine man to know!
Perhaps you should give lessons, Geoff! The world needs many more like you!
All the best in 2008, everyone.
Either way, it remains a really thorny issue.
I want to thank Jonny for raising the subject and I think that it has been a useful discussion. I was amazed at Marttin's report of 1008 uploads in 24 hours.

He is back! The downrater put a 1 and even two downraters a 1 on all my pictures. Where is that abuse button? I can't find it

The abuse button is just left of the 'rate picture' window; it is symbolized by a 'stop' sign. When you hit it, you have to fill-in your e-mail adress, and then some text explainig why you complain( downrating, indecent pic, stolen pic, etc)

The new star rating system is here.
Is it better?
Well, I lost my gold camera award - no big deal - but I'm not sure how when the votes turn into a 5 star (on more recent pictures of mine 4 or 5 people have said they have voted 5 but still only 4 stars showing). Is there a formula?
Perhaps we should have some more definition around what each star rating means? Suggestions?
Perhaps we should drop it all together? Language difficulty - anyone can still type 5 in the comments box.
Its a good debate - lets get this one going again!

I agree with Boxclever, in that I certainly would welcome more clarity on how the star rating system works in Woophy 2. Scrolling through my own pictures, I have been unable to find any obvious link between :
a. The number of comments ; and
b. The Rating each member commenting says they have given
on each photograph. It is, of course, quite possible that it is just that my non-mathematical brain is incapable of grasping a complex formula .
Can any other cleverer member explain ?

I have the idea that not everybody is as honest as we think. I often see someone saying 5 and only give 4. Or saying 5 and not rating at all. Realy bad rating is ofcourse very tragic. But we are all together on woophy and if i see someone has rated a picture very bad and in my opinion the photo earns more stars i just rate perhaps 5 were i think it should be 4, then it middles and the rating is better. If we help eachother, downraters have nothing to do on woophy, because they can't cause any harm. regards. Trudy.

Here's an idea that may work.
Mentally judge the picture on 5 levels, jot down the scores : e.g. -
* Wow factor - 5 * Artictic excellence - 5 * Technical merit - 3 (e.g. slightly over exposed) * Composition - 3 (e.g. could have been improved if cropped) * Highly original - 4 (e.g. unusual take on the subject)
Averge score = 4 (4 stars, not 5 even though initial inclination might have been to give it a 5). Importantly round up or round down, e.g. if it comes greater than 4.5 then give it 5 stars.
So WATCH - is it too complicated? I don't know but it might help people to think more than just "lovely colours" or "I like it so I'll give it a '5 star".
Comments could then be added accordingly. A "2 star" rating might then be seen as not an insult but a commendation and, with the right comments added, guidance on how to improve ones pictures.
Any thoughts?
