Recently i have been looking through the thousands of photos on this site and seeing other comments people have been writing and people are confused over certain picture that have no title. also i have noticed some adult content .

Firstly on the labeling side, there are some great photos of the obvious ie trees animals and so forth. But the are some subjects that are very close to peoples hearts and very sensetive . Some people have different cultures strong beliefs and like to share them but to some of the woophy members not leaving a label on your photo doesn't help people understand the true scope of the subject ie the concentration camp photos. and other very sensetive and meaningful subjects there are in the world today.
A suggestion to help people with this matter maybe a compulsory title for photos uploaded maybe?

Right the second thing im slightly concerned on is the lack of protection to our younger or more sensitive natured members on the content of some photos and forum threads and links. i know they are art and are very well taken but just concerned as i have children and would like to know sites like this have some control over content.
i use another site where they have a choice before you open the picture which tells you it has adult content just wondered if there is anything in woophy 2 that will accommodate this and thanks for listening.

For photos that you think are NOT artistic and inappropriate for children, you can always use the abuse button. It may or may not result in removal of the work, but you can register your opinion that way. I've reported some photos here that seemed to me posted to provoke, and sometimes they were removed, and sometimes they weren't. Woophy is private property and the owners I guess can make a judgment call.

I would NOT label nude pictures of the human body "adult content" by default. Kids on the internet need a watchful eye, no doubt. My own parents wouldn't have wanted me looking at what they considered to be pornography and took steps to prevent that, but they never stopped me from looking at art, even when some might have wondered at their judgment of the subject. I saw photos and fine art of nudes from early childhood on. They were my parents and which was which was their call.

I haven't ever seen Woophy promoted as a children's site. We do have some under-18s as users. Maybe some of them will speak up about how they feel (one of them is a Forum moderator!)

jonny. An interesting, and thought-provoking, topic ! I completely agree with your comment about the need for labelling. If one of Woophy's purposes is to enable amateur photographers to show others what their part of the world looks like, it makes sense to tell viewers what it is they are looking at.

The " adult " argument is more complex. I partially agree with scarlet : if, as is likely, there are very few child Woophy members, some form of imposed " parental control " seems unnecessary ( that, surely, is each parent's responsibility ). More controversially, as scarlet points out, how do you define " adult " ? Do all pictures of nudes automatically come within this definition, or only those whose purpose is overtly erotic ? What about pictures showing human activity " at the margins " - sexual activity, cruelty, etc. ? Are those which are " artistic " acceptable, while others are not ?

Where does individual " freedom of choice " come into play ? I happen to hold strong Christian beliefs and am, therefore, likely to find some images offensive which, to others, are perfectly acceptable. Yet I feel uneasy about any suggestion of censorship.

Help ! What do other members think ?

Regards

Geoff. ( Geoffrey McElwaine )

thanks for both your responses .
i had a link put on my forum that is classed as art , i opened the link and found it very stomach churning , it was very well done but not to my taste and wasn't prepared for what i was about to see . I'm not really preaching parent control more a caution and consideration for other people views and beliefs. i found this link very offensive but other people might not so I'm not asking to bad content just be a filter button to warn you of its content first.i dont think it needs abuse button because that's my own taste and not fair on the artist who photographed the subject . so i feel just a simple adult content button to press first would just be more for consideration for others.
as for parents responsibility, it is down to the parent but i also think its down to other peoples good nature in preparing people for the content that's why labeling is a good idea i think and also for other peoples more diverse taste i think an adult filter button so likes of me dont get offended by there content.

regards jonny

Yes, but what about the people who are not of good nature? Do you think they will put such a warning label on their content? I don't think you can ask that the "nice" people put a warning label, because i can assure you the people who are "not nice" won't bother.

It sounds like what happened to you is a perfect time to use info@woophy.com or the abuse button. If you're not comfortable say something to the people who manage & own Woophy. But I'm not putting any warning labels on my pix, that would be the nail in the Woophy coffin for me, such a policy. I know someone might say "your pictures don't need warning labels, scarlet" but I'm not talking about just my pictures.

I am sensitive to the problem, but in most cases unless something is violently denigrating to a group, I'm not going to complain. I can just move on to the next picture I do want to look at. I have complained about violently racist pictures that were being posted on Woophy for awhile and the staff have responded.

And I'm a meek librarian from a deeply conservative country (USA) so I'm not some crazy Jezebel saying nudies for all. ;-))
