Miguel;,
Players like Mathijsen, van Bommel, Heitinga, van der Vaart, Vlaar, Boularouz do not have the physical ability to cope with these temperatures. They look very different from the lean players of Southern Europe, remember at the start of the game against Germany it was 34C and do not forget the very high humidity. Younger players do this a lot better.
It is really amazing that Holland is the only team that plays 3 matches in the same Stadium, the hottest place of them all, Charkov
In both games the very first 20 minutes were all right for Holland. Even Germany could not uphold the pace for the full 90 minutes. As you confirmed none of the 11 players (with the exception of Matthijsen - did play in Spain last year. Many games in Spain are played as late as 22.00 hours in the evening and the season ends in May............ to start early September again . Now it is almost the longest day.
Unfortunately I can only prove my statement if we come through and start playing in the rain and coolness of Poland.
I do not believe we will - as Portugal is better equipped in the above .

Jan, of course the temperature subject is, indeed, a subject where our ideas are completely different and that is not a problem, of course. For me football players have to deal with every kind of high or low temp., rain or snow (do you remember FCPorto won the International title, in Japan, playing on heavy snow, something the players had never done before?), etc. Both teams deal with it! Ok
Well, congratulations to Spain for a great win (though I start being a bit fed up with that kind of playing, they do it better than anyone and play with the rules, so..!), with Torres finally appearing. Croatia and Italy also played an interesting match as the final result was always questionable.
But I want to say here: many Congratulations to Ireland who has the best football supporters in the world, with the greatest fair-play, with passion for football and its national team! I attended dozens of international football matches here in Porto during my life and can't forget those who I also consider the best team supporters I ever seen: Celtic Glasgow! And though it stays in Scotland, you know, the majority of their supporters cross the sea from Ireland (geographicaly speaking). Irish, north or south, U2 are the best!

Yes, Miguel you are right top players should be able...... etc. But the fact is that half of the Dutch players cannot and that it is my neutral observation.
Spain is just preparing for the real thing ( I hope ) they spend the least energy and that might help them in the future, indeed it is a bit dull now and then but it is effective.
I fully agree that the Irish are the best supporters of them all.
To night I expect a surprise from Sweden who also have great fans !

@Miguel: Why fed up? I'm not, I really prefer this kind of playing! Since Spain plays like this has a lot more success than before Far away from other teams strategy (as Italy, for example!) What I mean, I prefer a team that is trying their best to play the ball, with also a fair and effective defense (although I hate Piqué and Ramos, as you probably know )

About the Irish supporters, yes they are the best. Look at this link explaining the meaning of the song they were singing at the end of the match (article in spanish)

http://www.vavel.com/es/internacional/eurocopa-201 2/irlanda-2012/170480-que-cantaban-los-irlandeses- al-final-the-fields-of-athenry.html

And just one more thing, U2 are not the best!!!!! Thin Lizzy were MUCH BETTER!!!

Santí, I wrote: "I start being a bit fed up with that kind of playing, they do it better than anyone..."
It means, they do it so much better than all the others that... it's frustrating for the viewer (at least for me). I really can't stand anymore looking at Xaví, Iniesta and Alonso doing those circles! Or... circus? As a show, I prefer to watch the football played by Holland (not this one, so far) or Uruguay, for instance. I don't enjoy the present portuguese national team playing with so much calculation from defense to the forward man, don't like the super defense as Greece or even Italy when winning at a certain moment of the match, as I don't enjoy looking at Xaví and Iniesta (the best in the world) playing around and around and around. I know they are the best, I know they will win with a great probability their games, but... (we all have different tastes, isn't it?) as a entertainment it's not my fav football! A question: which is your explanation for the last match between Portugal (4) and Spain(0)? I have mine
Abrazos, Amigo

PS: U2=southern irish+northern irish Anyway, I do like U2, the Band (you know, I shaked hands with Bono in 1982, in Portugal, and that is a ... mark

about the PS, I know, just joking

About the rest, I understand it's a matter of view. It's true that when some teams plays against my Espanyol in this way I'm also a bit fed up. Anyway understand me that after spanish match vs Ireland maybe I'm a bit euphoric than before
Anyway, I keep my original bet: Germay will win. Although I hope to be wrong!

What a phenomenal night.

My favourite of the Group-A and unarguably the best of the lot, against all odds, unceremoniously ousted by the Greeks.

At least the Greeks back at home have something to celebrate after all what they are going through.

So it's the Czechs and the Greeks who progress!

Yes, incredible! How football can bring such surprises!

After a first match Russia.4-1.Czech Rep., ... now the Czechs are first and Russia is out!

Unbelievable! Besides, after declaring the russian team as the one who was playing the best football, today...a well deserved defeat, not doing much to get through!

With such surprises, let's see tomorrow! Who knows, maybe Portugal and Denmark may go through against all odds

That is not against al odds Miguel looking at the positions in the group.
Against all odds would be a qualification of Holland after two defeats...........

Finally Ronaldo broke free from the egg-shell, and punished the Dutch to lead Portugal to the quarterfinals. And in this way Holland (someone said: the best forwards, the most beautiful play) bows out by losing all the 3 group-stage games.

Well done Germany.

PS: And the weather was 22° C

The expected deception for Holland, no chance of victory but better play than the other 2 matches as temperatures were slightly lower. Congrats to Portugal and Germany and lots of success in the coming matches,
We were simplynot good enough!

Oops, I couldn't believe it!
I couldn't see the match (my heart wouldn't allow:wink, I saw the first 30m of Germany-Denmark (then, loud music, so that my neighbour wouldn't lead me to think if there was or not any goals:wink, and 2 minutes before the match ending a great woophyan friend from abroad was the one who let me know the result by SMS! Now, I'll sit quietly in the sofa and see the recorded version
For me it's still a mystery to understand the dutch fail (I mean in the overall group). Coach? Maybe. Too many excellent players to build a quiet "balneary"? Maybe too.
Germany-Greece; Portugal-Czech Rep.! Wow.
Predictions for the other quarters:
Spain-England; France-Italy.

TV now

PS: Thank you, Jan, thank you Ruud, thank you NGC

Congratulations to all our friends in Portugal. Well deserved. Unlike our players, Ronaldo, showed his skills at the right moment.

Now Portugal, win your first tournament !

So the Spaniards go through as the group-winners, and the Azzuri become the runner-ups.

Hard luck for the Croats, but it's back to the drawing-board for the Lephrechauns.
