Hello there, I am thinking of buying a new camera but i don't know wich one? Should i buy a Canon 1100D or save a little more and go for the Nikon D3100? I know the nikon has some better features, but i would like to have some advice. And what lenses would fit the canon or nikon? Because i saw the original (canon and nikkor) are a bit expencive. Thanks for your advice and sorry if i am a little unclear. Geert Meulendijks

Hi, Geert
As a Canonist I could say go for Canon. But I won't At that (entry/basic) level, I think the D3100 is better. Have a look and compare here: URL An extra question: you are sure you want a DSLR camera (to buy extra lenses in future)? Ok. If not, consider a Panasonic Lumix FZ150 (Leica lense)! See again here: URL You have EXTRA fast movies, 3D photos, it's much faster (12 fps!!!), a 24-600 zoom and still keeps the Raw files facility as Nikon! Just another suggestion! Ok, image quality shall be better in Canon and Nikkon but I think it's marginaly better (if you don't use to make big enlargements, I guess you will be pleased with the Lumix). Oh, I'm not a Panasonic agent . Still, I'm a Canon user for over 35 years. Have a good decision Best regards from Porto, Miguel
PS: If you buy the Nikon or Canon, consider a few Sigma or Tokina (maybe also some Tamron) lenses. You may have comparisons in that web site

Now i am considering between the nikon and the Lumix, i saw it is a bit faster and also has all the features i want to have it, shoots 12mp wich is also good. But are there enough lenses for the Lumix to so i don't have to pick around 4 or 5?

Geert, that Lumix I wrote about isn't a DSLR, it's a "bridge" camera. So, no interchangeable lenses! It comes with a 25-600mm zoom. This is its advantage (besides others I already wrote before). Its drawback is, of course, a not so high performance as a DSLR, though, comparing with those of entry/basic level, you don't notice it so clearly (mainly if you won't make great enlargements). And still it gets "raw" files, for me the most essential tool to be able to work on pictures in your software! Enjoy your choice, whatever it will be M.O.

Well, i'm going to buy the Nikon D3100 this week. But really thanks to the help! And could i get some advice about wath lenses to buy how to upgrade my "collection". It would be used for some Macro and action at the most times. Should have a regular zoom (not only 3) and some scenery and landscapes. So just an average multitask lens. Or is the standard lens good for the first month of photographing? Geert

As a Nikon user..(got the D7000) I use the Nikor AF-S 18-200mm 1.3,5 - 5,6 GII multi purpose lens,
I know Christa (Grannychristina - D90) using it as well, very good quality and ideal in any conditionings.
for Macro, I bought a Sigma 105mm macro lens, very good and less expensive
If you start-up with those....you will be ok

Thanks for your advice about the lenses Jan, but i noticed there a bit expencive (seen my limit) so i think i will stick to the standard lens and maybe expand some time later. Geert
