IF YOU WANT TO TAKE PART IN THE WORKSHOP PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE RULES BELOW:
1. Join the workgroup in this link: http://www.woophy.com/forum/12_4440_0.html . The of members list will be open all the time (to get in and to get out).
2. Each member of the workgroup agrees in being a critic for other members (not necessarily all them) and being criticized by the rest of members (not necessarily all them).
3. The main idea is to make a critic of a whole work from a photographer and not only of a picture. It’s aviced to browse to the whole collection of the photographer under critics (but it’s not obligatory, specially considering that there are some very large portafolios).
4. Nevertheless, a sample around 20 pictures selected by the photographer will be posted in the appropriate forum thread in order to highlight which pictures the photographer considers as the best examples of his/her photographic work. The critics will take specially these pictures into account, but all the collection can be browsed and used for the critic’s work.
5. All opinions must be accepted by all members, like it or not. The only limits for the critics is to be sincere, to be polite and to be constructive. This is supposed to be a workshop to learn... if you want flattery just have a look at the normal comments in your pictures.
6. All aspects of photography would be under critics: quality, quantity, originality, subject, composition, light, color, white balance, edition, etc... But this doesn't mean that you must criticize all these things. Concerning the critics, you will find a very good summary in Miguel's blog here: ".Elements of Analysis
7. This workgroup doesn't intend to be an "exclusive club for experienced photographers". All members are welcome, with all photographic levels... (If you don't know about white balance, depth of field, ISO, etc... just tell us "I like your collection or I don't like it at all and try to explain why with your own words...)
8. The strategy "you scratch my back and I scratch yours" is not accepted in such a workgroup... Let's be serious...
Now some ideas about the way to carry this out:
1st. Join the group in the forum linked before.
2nd. You will be in a queue and you will have to wait to your turn to post your own gallery in a new forum topic. There will be 4 members showing their collections at the same time for one week.
3rd. When it's your turn post a forum topic with the title: "CRITICS WORKSHOP: Member’s nickname gallery". In this topic you will cut and paste these rules and those written above and post around 20 pictures selected from your own collection. It would be nice also if you could write few words about your photographic work: what are you interested in, what do you want to transmit with your pictures, for how long you are a photographer... and whatever you think it’s important to consider for a critic.
Dear Woophians
Just now the 10th year has started where the digital photography for me has become a beloved hobby. This was my very first picture I made with my first digital camera Nikon 880 in spring 2001. Things I love are the subjects I try to grasp with the camera-eye. These includes the nature in the broadest sense. All manifestations of our natural landscapes, (one of my first landscape picture I made in 2001 is still uploaded on woophy) , mountains, hills, ponds, woods and marshes, as well as individual trees, which has always fascinated me (this linden was the first picture I uploaded on Woophy in March 2006)
, where as people photography, it is still being left for tests. Perhaps because I have inhibitions about shooting people. who I have not yet been overcome. Since my garden is another hobby from me, some of that the variety of plant life appears in my Woophy portfolio too. (Do not be angry with me).
drumlin (derived from the Gaelic word druim (“rounded hill,” or “mound”) is an elongated whale-shaped hill formed by glacial action. These drumlins form the landscape of the place I am living. 5 minutes on foot from home I have this view and the possibility to photograph this charming landscape at various seasons. Between the hills are marshes where the cold air collects. This dissolving mist are encountered very frequently 1
2
3
A somewhat different view of perhaps the most photographed mountain. Only the tip of the Matterhorn appears behind the sunlit snow field.
4
From the neighboring community, I have a wide view into Central Switzerland. In the background the Pilate and in front of it lies the Lake Lucerne.
5
These two pictures are from my vacation in the Lower Engadine Valley. The Church of Scuol and the Tarasp Castle
6
7
You've probably noticed it, trees are my great love. Whether dead or alive, alone or at the forest border, trees for me always have something fascinating.

The winter is ideal for black & white pictures
13
14
15
The single characteristic in our trees are the Linden. So the landowners when a son is born plants on the top of the drumlins a linden tree, as it is known the custom.
16
The moorland exert a special charm and fascination. Here are pictures from the nature reserve Reussspitz.
17
18
In the Bavarian Forest National Park. the forest recoveres after the storm and the bark beetle which is very clearly seen by the new green on the ground and the dead trees above.
19
Another big hobby of mine is the garden with mixed borders. Flowers can also become pictures, what I want to show with this poppy. Not the focus here is primarily, but the overall impression
20
I would like to thank all of you for the effort and time you take to assess my "works". By the way it was Woophy that encouraged me to occupy myself more with this wonderful and fulfilling activity of photography. So this site must go on.
!LONG LIVE WOOPHY!

Hi Erwin,
I like very much your pictures which are well composed and taken under a good light. But, as it is a Critics workshop, I have to make some suggestions on your selection ...
I think that would be better if the bottom was cropped a bit. I find too flat: adjusting the histogram would help. The light on is not as good as on others, such as , which I like really very much. I find rather strange, but I don't know what should be done (I tried adding a border, or increasing the contrast, but that doesn't really help). I hope you (and others) will be able to continue uploading pics like these on Woophy. alain

Hi Erwin, You are very lucky living in a place with such splendid nature togethher with an attractive weather phenomenon like this beautiful ground fog that we can find in so many pics of yours. Anyone that loves nature must love your pics too and so I do! Most of your pics are technically and compositionally close to perfect and the editing is very natural. All this makes one wonder what you could do with it applying to other subjects than nature. I can imagine what looking at your pics

I feel a little ashamed as some members wrote the same thing about my fascination with windmills and Dutch landscapes. But was not Woophy meant to show the world?? You do that in a way that appeals to the senses especially in special light circumstances such as backlight. My favourite of you selection is the season collage (12) although it is a pity the that the pov is slightly different . If I have to be very critical I would say that to me 14 is relatively flat and it lacks some space on all sides but certainly on the right side. I agree with Alain that nr. 14 -although interesting as a subject - lacks contrast especially in this light background.
Concluding my review I can only confirm that your pictures are an enrichment to the woophy portfolio. Such a shame that - since you are not that active in commenting - they receive less attention that they should! .

Hi Erwin,
during this workshop I think I only had twice same feeling as now, looking to a gallery and thinking "I like all pictures". And this makes me very difficult to comment it trying to find something that could be better, so I think all of them are perfect pictures. Even the last one I think is a great picture, with a marvelous sharpness on the "heart" of the flower, although in this case maybe the compo could be better with a different crop. For example I prefer these ones: , or . Anyway, remember that I'm not a great flower fan Being very strict I can also say that picture maybe could be better with more contrast and color saturation (I see it a little flat, but it's just my begginer's opinion). And now yes, all the rest are simply perfect. Compos, colors, light, sharpness, all are more than excellent. And it's not back scratching, believe me The only thing I can say is, maybe the feature that attracts me more from a photographer is the versatility, and I see that you have in your portfolio basically nature pictures and some portrait. I'd like to see more street pictures, abstract or people shots for example. And I understand what you said of your inhibitions about shooting people, it's the same for me… But just if it helps: I started shooting people from the back and then I tried to change it progressively to shot them from the front. But I'm very shy and it's still very difficult for me, so I can really understand your words… From your selection I love because of the compo and the wonderful light coming from the trees and leaving the shadows on the snow; because its beautiful compo and amazing sky, although are not taken from exactly same pov (or that seems for me); for its simplicity, and the marvelous sky and reflections in . And it was a pleasure to look into collection finding more great pictures, as , , and . Cheers!

Hello, Erwin, I love flowers and nature but not in photo, where I prefer the social side. that's why some of your photos, which are all nearly perfect technically, does not attract me more than that. so I 'm most attracted by pictures that seem most original to my eyes, sometimes by an unexpected cut like this "eye to eye" or when the subject is in an unusual framing like here and where the new-born poppy looks more like an E.T than like a flower
or from your selection your n°4 and of course your superbs 12 and 2 . all my encouragements for being less shy and try some street scenes with characters for example or portraits because you can do it : your daughter's portrait is wonderful ( well, of course, you were advantaged by a beautiful model )
best regards, brigitte

Erwin, making pictures of nature is not my thing because I live in a city without any real nature nearby. I like to try it when I have the opportunity on a vacation. Looking at your pictures I can only say I admire most all of them. You have a way to show us your country that makes me want to go there and look for myself (isn´t this what woophy is all about). Surely some shots could have anther crop (10) but so what. My favorites are 1, 4, 11, 13 and 14. Please keep up showing those great landscapes.

hello Erwin,
trees on almost all of your photo's. i can understand your fascination. especially these solitary and naked wintertrees are so beautiful; so much more tree than the dressed summer ones.
one of my favourites from your selection is this one:
and the Rembrandt-like light on this one is wonderful:
yes, we should more often look upwards:
and another favourite:
your poppy doesn't give me a thrill (as a lot of your trees do), but i like this one:
and this photo makes me curious for some other sides of your beautiful country:
and perhaps a bit abundant to mention: your photo's are well composed and light, colours, sharpness etc. are good

Hi Erwin,
I can be very short after going through your portofolio: I love all your pictures!!!! Also I think that the use of light, the compositions, the colours, the sharpness and so on are always great! Besides the ones you choose, I like the next one for the fairytale feeling it gives me and for the human interest that it's showing. Thanks for sharing your beautiful nature!!! Best regards Dieneke
