IF YOU WANT TO TAKE PART IN THE WORKSHOP PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE RULES BELOW:

1. Join the workgroup in this link: http://www.woophy.com/forum/12_4440_0.html . The of members list will be open all the time (to get in and to get out).

2. Each member of the workgroup agrees in being a critic for other members (not necessarily all them) and being criticized by the rest of members (not necessarily all them).

3. The main idea is to make a critic of a whole work from a photographer and not only of a picture. It’s aviced to browse to the whole collection of the photographer under critics (but it’s not obligatory, specially considering that there are some very large portafolios).

4. Nevertheless, a sample around 20 pictures selected by the photographer will be posted in the appropriate forum thread in order to highlight which pictures the photographer considers as the best examples of his/her photographic work. The critics will take specially these pictures into account, but all the collection can be browsed and used for the critic’s work.

5. All opinions must be accepted by all members, like it or not. The only limits for the critics is to be sincere, to be polite and to be constructive. This is supposed to be a workshop to learn... if you want flattery just have a look at the normal comments in your pictures.

6. All aspects of photography would be under critics: quality, quantity, originality, subject, composition, light, colour, white balance, edition, etc... But this doesn't mean that you must criticize all these things. Concerning the critics, you will find a very good summary in Miguel's blog here: ".Elements of Analysis

7. This workgroup doesn't intend to be an "exclusive club for experienced photographers". All members are wellcome, with all photographic levels... (If you don't know about white balance, depth of field, ISO, etc... just tell us "I like your collection or I don't like it at all and try to explain why with your own words...)

8. The strategy "you scratch my back and I scratch yours" is not accepted in such a workgroup... Let's be serious...

Now some ideas about the way to carry this out:

1st. Join the group in the forum linked before.

2nd. You will be in a queue and you will have to wait to your turn to post your own gallery in a new forum topic. There will be 4 members showing their collections at the same time for one week.

3rd. When it's your turn post a forum topic with the title: "CRITICS WORKSHOP: Member’s nickname gallery". In this topic you will cut and paste these rules and those written above and post around 20 pictures selected from your own collection. It would be nice also if you could write few words about your photographic work: what are you interested in, what do you want to transmit with your pictures, for how long you are a photographer... and whatever you think it’s important to consider for a critic.

About me: I'm not a photographer, just a plain amateur ! I 'inherited' my first digital camera 6 years ago, it had an amazing 3.3 Mp, was as fast as a snail on a Sunday morning
but allowed quiet some manual manipulation and was even able to save pictures in tiff.
I started reading a lot about photography, tried out all possibilities of my camera and learned how to edit my pictures.
2 years ago I bought my first dslr and I'm still in love with it. I found out about the things it can do and those it can't and right now I'm waiting for the days I will have a little more time to take it out more often and practice with it, for I think this is a wonderful hobby !
You will not find exotic locations or stunning models in my portofolio, right now I have to do with the beauty and nature that surrounds me and I'm trying to picture that in a decent and interesting way...

Picture 1. is a scan from an analogue picture, 2, 3 and 4 were taken with my first digital camera (2 as a tiff file)

Hello, Bluesbuster,

well, looking at your selection & collection, and on the other hand reading your words
I'm not a photographer, just a plain amateur and I started reading a lot about photography , I would say you really read perfectly
when you say
You will not find exotic locations , it depends where you live : your superb for example, is surely very exotic for an African !
and when you add or stunning models, let me say that without the "stunning" kids, your would stay very good but not excellent !

I can't detail exactly why I like your pics but already can say they are done with "savoir-faire" as well for compo, great use of light(looking for example at your and comparing to the other fly agarics on Woophy, as we say here "y'a pas photo!" than for always very neat editing ( and here, i would like to remind this edition of one of my pics that,imo, is better than the original) ;
I love your humor, too that we can find in your shots or in their title and/or in their editing
I like the way you still try new views for used subjects and sometimes with just a tiny change (no heavy processing that i dislike) that rocks as in
and I'll finish wishing you keep on looking as in to make us do the same
friendly yours,
brigitte

Hi Bluesbuster,

Maybe you're an amateur photographer as you wrote before, but it doesn't seems that at all. Your pictures are very sensitives, originals, excellent composed, nicely framed… it's really a pleasure for me to visit your portfolio, and I ever find something to learn from them. For example, I think these pictures from your selection are simply superb , , (here you had a great idea, and also a privileged pov!), (a masterpiece imo) and .
I also like very much your variety of subjects, locations, techniques… I think this shows that you really enjoy to make pictures and for this reason you test all you can to improve your skills, that I think it's the best way to do it!
The only things that I can say you in a not complimentary way aren't obviously related to techniques, I'm much more amateur than you ;P, but they are just a matter of taste: I usually don't like flower pics and you have some of them (these two are an exception that you will surely understand why I like and ), and I usually like b&w pics and you have very few of them. Only this. As you see, just matter of taste
Other pics I like very much in your selection are , , , , (very funny this one!) and this beautiful reflection .
And, not included in this threat but that I think are wonderful: , , , this another masterpiece and .
Cheers!

Hi Bluesbuster,
Bearing in mind rule 8 of our workgroup I will not confine myself to the excellent pictures in your selection although there are many of them!
The pictures 3, 4, 6, 10, 12 and 16 do not belong to my favourites, not because they are no good but because they do not appeal to my senses. Having said that the rest of the task is very easy.
Nr. 13 is still my favourite masterpiece (gold) closely followed by nr. 1 the Greek lady that goes for silver . In the sixties I once I was invited to eat an Easter cake by an old couple in a tiny village on Rhodes, an unforgettable meeting very reminiscent to this wonderful picture.
Nr. 2 is a more than excellent portrait.
Nr. 5 is a wonderful scene but the cropping is weak although I know that street scenes are not that easy to steer.
The motion in 7 is splendid and 8 has a brilliant composition. Pictures 9, 11, 14 17 and 19 although very different subjects - convey a very beautiful and relaxing atmosphere.
The human touch in 14 and 17 is very interesting and well captured.
Nr. 20 is astonishing in simplicity and therefore gets my bronze medal.

Hi Bluesbuster!

Wow, Your selection looks really impressive! I'll take my time to make a complete critic but I can't do it now. I have a big lack of spare time nowadays and still many galleries to comment on. But I promise I will!

Hugs!

Ruden

Finally, there's time for some toughts about your photos!

Geert. hi! Good photos! Thanks, fav and 5 and of course Congratulations! *****

Okay!... That's about it with meaningless comments from this little part of Norway. Let's get to down to something constructive.
Of course...! all IMO!

A long time ago, and if you make the mistake on viewing full size, you'll know why. So. I'm not going to care about noise, megapixels etc on this one.
This is a fine example on how to shoot people. You've caught a wonderful scene and you can actually see her face instead of peoples back. Something many of us (including me) needs to pay focus to.
Good work.

At first my toughts was this: Wrong white balance! What's up with the burned out banana? The diagonal lines looks good, One hand is cut of. A handle?.. Well. I still feel the same except for the diagonal lines. Are they really adding something to the photo? Nope.
Sorry, Geert. You have evolved a lot since this photo

So. What about this one?
A view in full size reveals old camera. No technical comments on this one. Time to pour out some feeeeeeelings about this one! This defintely has a little something to it. What kid sits on an old wooden bench? Old benches are for old people! I think this photo shows it very good! Not bad at all, but it needs a little something to get really noticed. A tighter crop, concentrate on the boy and part of the bench might help.

I do not even want to know what we are staring at! Excellent light, color and detail! New camera?

Now, we're really talking! Wonderful street scene, very well light even if it might be a touch too much the scene is really appealing and deserves a space on a wall. Good work, Geert!

A large jump from "kid with burned out banana"
Seeing what other see, but shooting what other people do not is one way to shoot good photos. This is a fine example on what to do! I feel drawn into the cornfield!

Perfect motion blur and thank you for using up this photo opportunity. I hate spinning carousels!
Even if the shutterspeed is good in this one, it looks like you've been too tough with sharpening?

One of my woophy-all-time-favourite! I'm actually trying to shoot this when finding similar, but nothing comes close to this! 462810

Shot a "few times" by other photographers It needs a little something to be exciting.

I guess this is what Woophy is all about. Showing parts of the world. Okay photo, but if we could see a person coming towards us, it would be more exciting.

Very nice and calm landscape photo. A little too much empty space at the left, but it is still pleasing to my eyes

Nice scene, but does it
have a blue color cast? A slight adjustment in photoshop did good

Suggestion: 1X !

Beatiful silver like color! A little too much unneeded space at the top, but it still looks very good! Exciting angle and well caught scene

Good street scene. It leaves a little for our imagination. Very good light, color and depth

666xxx Good caught
This is more or less abstract and not my cup of tea. it needs a little straightening to be 100% symmetrical.

Wonderful winter scene. How much did you want the car to disappear when you shot this?

766752
Agree completely with this "Ridar" as he calls himself. Wonder if it is his real name?
"Nice play with colours! Together with good focus and sharpness, this is very pleasant for the eye "

"Fine work, Blues! Technically, the photo looks great! very detailed and pin sharp. Lots of details in the dark areas and wonderfully composed and seen!
Most important for me is the fact that the photo changes. At first it shows beautiful reflections, then there definitely is some kind of creature resting in the water. I do not think it looks dangerous, but off course. Looks can be deceiving!
At the end, it is a beautiful spot of the world!
Nice work! One of your better imo
I think this might look good on a wall "

I've not changed my mind

..., and the same with this one
"Treasure
Beautiful soft colors and depth! Good work, Bluesbuster!
True eyecandy! I'll actually rate and add as a favourite! "

That's it!

hello bluesbuster,

one of the first photo's that i remember from you collection, is the number 1 in this selection. it's a very good composition, a great statement and still one of your best i think.

the half of your photo's is from linkhout, the village you live in. there are some mere beauties; for instance:

your number 17 is also very good. but i don't like the frame.

i like your landscapes more than the detail-photo's of mother nature. question of taste, i suppose. though your number 6, the tunnel in the cornfield, is well done. and you are one of the few who's mushrooms i like. and this one of course is excellent:

other jewels in your selection:

what i like is your humour (on many occasions) and your photo-shop experiments; for instance:

you have some wonderful photo's of children. two examples (not in your selection):

i'd like to see more photo's from the village linkhout itself; it's nature and your family are the main subjects now.

and two other ones i like:

in general: good light, colours and sharpness, composed, framed and presented with care; often surprising and with a touch of humour (number 5 for instance). and your number 19 has convinced me i have to visit Belgium's biggest lake one day.

Hi Bluesbuster,

I must say I discover some of your portfolio and I like it very much.

a picture that express very well this type of rare and warm moment of simplicity and hospitality. Very spontaneous with also a good light, a good compo and pleasant colors.

Not perfect technically (hand and banana overexposed) but a nice compo with something interesting in the kid’s expression and attitude.

3 and 4 are too confused with a limited impact.

I love the atmosphere, the colors and the two boys attitude

really amazing effect like what you get with some filters. The kind of vortex surrounding the yellow light makes me think of some paintings by Van Gogh.

one of your best shots. I love the lines, the colors and the movement.

a very special and dream-like atmosphere due to the compo and the magnificent light.

9- Pretty ordinary, the horizontal line is boring too
10- Something disturbing in the compo (white building too present ?)
11- I like the colors, the light but not so much the compo

Beautiful atmosphere, well composed

Excellent exposure, light and compo. Does the effect come from editing or from a real mirror ?

I love trees and that one is really magnificent with great color shades and a perfect light. The grain gives also an interesting texture and the birds make the final touch.

Very funny…the attitudes, expressions and positions of people are perfect. I like also the empty chair.

Impressive POV and original compo. Gives the impression of some powerfull preacher (It's a shame the cross is not symetric)

Beautiful and subtle light for this winter mood. A good compo too. The birds make this picture also.

Interesting compo with this strong color contrast. Great expression of the child.

19 and 20: not so attractive for me. I don’t like the compo (19) and the subject (20).

In the rest of your collection I like also .

Well, you have a very pleasant collection, technically well done and a very good eye to catch beautiful moments of the life.

Regards, Zeeg

Hi Bluesbuster,

You've a great portofolio! The ones you choose are various and most of them I like.
The compositions and colours, use of light of all your pictures are good.
I also like the humour in some of your photo's.For instance:
I was impressed looking through your portofolio and enjoyed it very much!
Best Regards Dieneke
