IF YOU WANT TO TAKE PART IN THE WORKSHOP PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE RULES BELOW:
1. Join the workgroup in this link: http://www.woophy.com/forum/12_4440_0.html . The of members list will be open all the time (to get in and to get out).
2. Each member of the workgroup agrees in being a critic for other members (not necessarily all them) and being criticized by the rest of members (not necessarily all them).
3. The main idea is to make a critic of a whole work from a photographer and not only of a picture. It’s aviced to browse to the whole collection of the photographer under critics (but it’s not obligatory, specially considering that there are some very large portafolios).
4. Nevertheless, a sample around 20 pictures selected by the photographer will be posted in the appropriate forum thread in order to highlight which pictures the photographer considers as the best examples of his/her photographic work. The critics will take specially these pictures into account, but all the collection can be browsed and used for the critic’s work.
5. All opinions must be accepted by all members, like it or not. The only limits for the critics is to be sincere, to be polite and to be constructive. This is supposed to be a workshop to learn... if you want flattery just have a look at the normal comments in your pictures.
6. All aspects of photography would be under critics: quality, quantity, originality, subject, composition, light, colour, white balance, edition, etc... But this doesn't mean that you must criticize all these things. Concerning the critics, you will find a very good summary in Miguel's blog here: ".Elements of Analysis
7. This workgroup doesn't intend to be an "exclusive club for experienced photographers". All members are wellcome, with all photographic levels... (If you don't know about white balance, depth of field, ISO, etc... just tell us "I like your collection or I don't like it at all and try to explain why with your own words...)
8. The strategy "you scratch my back and I scratch yours" is not accepted in such a workgroup... Let's be serious...
Now some ideas about the way to carry this out:
1st. Join the group in the forum linked before.
2nd. You will be in a queue and you will have to wait to your turn to post your own gallery in a new forum topic. There will be 4 members showing their collections at the same time for one week.
3rd. When it's your turn post a forum topic with the title: "CRITICS WORKSHOP: Member’s nickname gallery". In this topic you will cut and paste these rules and those written above and post around 20 pictures selected from your own collection. It would be nice also if you could write few words about your photographic work: what are you interested in, what do you want to transmit with your pictures, for how long you are a photographer... and whatever you think it’s important to consider for a critic.
About me: When I first started I made pictures just for fun and for remembering nice moments, but along the line it got more serious and I started to read a lot about the art of photography. Now it's, besides music, my main hobby. I have learned for a long time you never stop learning. I still hope to make this one picture.................... My subjects are diverse and so is this gallery.

Martin de Rijk, hi!
Okay! This is ONLY nitpicking (Except #157391), because what your doing is imo extremely well done!
. My first thought was, "this guy has some serious balls!... He takes a photo that is probably very colorful, and turns it into B/W. Okay. Why?..." There has been some work done with the sky. Barely visible, but there is something edited there. Feel free to explain
My only complaint about this is the light. It seems burned out at some places
Why all the noise? Maybe a bit too much adjustments of the levels? After seeing the other photos, I'm actually surprised at this one.
You have a way of presenting mood and feelings in your photos. They all have a story to them, and imo composition, color and light is flawless. They're a joy to watch, and my only regret is not to have noticed your photos before.
Added as a favourite! Vidar

Hi Martin,
A general comment: I think that some of your pics are too soft (e.g. 7, 9, 16). I suppose that it is due to the size reduction of the pic for Woophy; a bit a sharpening would help.
Like Vidar, I think that 2 has overexposed parts; unlike Vidar, I like very much the light on 16; but it could be sharper.
I don't like 4: I have a feeling of confusion (or, in other words, there is not enough composition).
I like the monochrome 5, but not the green. Why not simply b&w?
6 is not, IMO, one of your best reflection pics; I prefer, e.g.
I like very much 12, but don't find 13 very special.
14 is a very good portrait but marred, IMO, by the elbow in front of the man.
17: too bad the visage is not visible; also, maybe too cropped?
These few remarks should not hide the fact that I like very much your style of photography, with a mix of portraits, graphical images, landscapes, bw&, .....

Hello Martin, You made a brave selection of your portfolio, not only the highest rated but also the ones that are usually less popular among Woophians. Technically your pictures are mostly very good so my comments will primairily concern the personal feelings I have watching them.
1. Splendid colours and composition, a minor discord is the modern bell but that is not your fault!
2. Never expected a nice shot like this coming from the ANTILLES.
3. I saw this coal harbour from a cruiseboat and even took quite a few pics of it, never even thought of uploading them here, stupid me! 4. I.m.o. looking at the large image the editing is a little overdone but the scene is remarkable
5. Spent a few days in Yangshuo myself, unfortunately my scanned analoge pics are not that good to publish them, here too in large there are some shortcomings esp. concerning the persons, the atmosphere however makes up very well.
6. Venice still life, nice scene but does not create warm feelings
7. Excellent without doubt!
8. A perfect shot telling a complete story
9. A lovely scene of a Yao kid see 10
10. A splendid landscape, as I walked the same road as you said yourself I bet this not in Guilin but the Lõng Shí Rice Terraces around the village Ping An near the town of Longsheng, I shot quite a few of these wonderful terraces myself, 11. Great city night shot, Oxford Street?
12. An interesting Mekong scene, good atmosphere!
13. Go to the start! Makes u wanna run! Splendid again!
14. A beautiful portrait, a pity the very special beard is partially lost in the background but you cannot optimalize a street scene as I well know.
15. Very original, stepping out/in scene!
16. Perfect lighted still life, sharp where it has to be!
17. I remember this place too, nice impression, composition can do without the outer left and right.
18. Splendid view of our industrial heritage.
19. You may think different but here the composition does not appeal to me.
20. Not my favourite.
Recapitulating my view: only a few minor weak points but overall a very interesting portfolio. You are a worthy example of woophy performance whose portfolio belongs to the best of the site!
Too bad you did not include
and this one is printed in our memory for ever!

Hello,Martin,
oh! I'll never dare "criticize" your work... you're one of the best photographers on Woophy ! nevertheless, i allows myself to criticize your selection for example, why did you choose your n°13 while you have in your collection this why your n°12 and not your or your n°17 and not this fabulous your n°16 tells a better story than your , so, this time, I indulge your whim and where are your and your ? Ah, yes, I remember: only 20 pics friendly yours, brigitte

Hi Martin! I have not much time for the Woophy at present, so please excuse me for being very short. First of all, you know very well that iI love your portfolio. And, if I may say so, I feel that your way of taking pictures is very near to my personal opinions and ideals about photography. The pictures in your selection can be divided, IMO, into 2 categories: we can call the 1st "scenes" and the 2nd "details". The Li River landscape, the London street at night or the Chinese pupils are in the 1st; the corn panes or the old bycicle are in the 2nd. My preference goes to the 1st section. Your "scenes" are strongly descriptive. This may not seem a very original comment, but the point is important. I mean that they really tell a story, they give us that feeling of "being there" which is the greatest feature for a photo. They really give the viewer a little fragment of the experience of the place. I know some of the places that are shown in your pictures, from the south-western China to NYC (and, of course, Italy), and I can witness that you have perfectly caught the spirit of those places. Consider your London street, for instance - I think that it would be difficult to condensate that city's atmosphere better than you did with that street view. In short, some of your pictures have that magic mixture of beauty and information that makes me dream when I browse the National Geographic magazine, or some travel photo book, or, sometimes, the Woophy.

Hi Martin,
Looking at your selection I've noticed that I know your portfolio less than I thought. Your pictures are really wonderful and they are very different between them, portraits, landscapes, abstract, b&w… which I think it's one of the most important things to do in photography, and also is funniest! It's very difficult for me to find something I don't like in your pictures, so as I can see you're probably one of the best photographers of the site, but I'll try it so it's the essence of this workshop: I don't like too much this compo, even if the blue color and texture are wonderful. It's just the scene, I don't find it special... I think it's a great idea to make a compo only with a few part of the boats and its reflection, but I don't like the resulting compo. not special again… I agree with la rafale when she says that this one is much better . I think it would be better in b&w, and also there's something disturbing on the compo… maybe the elbow as ortho158 said... On the other way, I love pictures as (great sharpness and color compo with wonderful textures) (gorgeus scenery and scene, I love the monochrome edition) (excellent scene cached, the right moment in the right place! It's also a very funny compo, so these kids seems in danger!) (an absolutely gorgeous scene, very nice composed) (what a view! simply amazing!) (absolutely perfect again. The light, the shadow and man's position, the colors on the floor on left side, excellent!) and (I love it, the compo and the b&w edition). I'm sure I will visit your collection more frequently in the future! Cheers!

hello Martin,
first: your selection (and your collection even more) shows a lot of variety. and technically (light, colours, sharpness, etc.) your photo's in general are very good. also: you present and frame them in a sober but attractive way. and you don't do too much post-work (one exception in your selection: number 4. too sharp in my eyes).
my absolute favourite from your selected photo's is this one:
and there are more surprising and great streetphoto's in your collection, for instance: and:
i like your architecture-photography very much, and i miss it more or less in your selection of 20 photo's. calatrava of course: but also (for instance): and:
humour; so important; you show it on several occasions (not in your selection):
apart from the chinese children (mentioned above), my favourites from your selection are the numbers 12 (london by night), 10 (ricefields; though a bit unsharp; but i love it), 7 (italian men), 6 (venice) and 5 (china again; in blue this time).
number 20: i love the idea and the b&w; but i think there is missing some space at the left side.
the numbers 1, 2, 3, 13, 11, 17 and 19 are technically good and well composed (and much better than 95 percent or perhaps 99 percent of the woophy-photo's), but they don't give me a thrill.
and i get a thrill from a lot of your photo's! this one: and an oldie:
and yes, another one:
the world in black and white or blue and white: i'd like to see more of this kind.
and: a lot of my favourites from your collection have a rather low number. hope to see you more often on woophy in the future. it's always a pleasure.

Hi Martin,
I like very much your portfolio (even if I don't put often comments). You have the sense of composition, of light and often show interesting scenes which "catch" the attention: situations, colours, lights, contrasts. Furthermore your work is IMO very representative of the "Woophy spirit". You capture the every day's life. You're with Woophy for a long time (oct 2005, quite from the beginning of Woophy !), and I still remember your nice pics from China when I was here in 2006 as Patt…
Technically you have a very good level and I have no general remarks on that point.
Let's come now to the pics selected (and some of those out of this selection that I love, from your Asian trips and elsewhere)
1 and 2 : playing with colors and contrasts, but I prefer N1, the compo is better here
3 : interesting contrast, with a story behind
4: amazing but confused, maybe some lack of a stronger foreground in the compo
5: Ah, Yangshuo…you captured a beautiful light and atmosphere
7: Well seen, (what about a small crop on the top ?) : A great pic, one of my fav in your gallery. Great situation and compo.
9 an 10 : maybe something lacking to make them stronger ? (compo, contrast, ?)
11: I like the situation and the loneliness of the character
12: great mood, with excellent light and compo
14: Good expression, but 2 weaknesses: the foreground and the background. This one is too sharp and the arm which is too "invading".
16: Beautiful light. A good evocation of the country past.
: I like the idea and the compo.
And now some of my fav in your portfolio:

Regards, Zeeg

Hello Martin
Looking through your portfolio, I've seen that you keep the memories of the past (Beatles, Liverpool, old neighborhoods) very appropriately in black and white.
I was surprised that the shots from the "former slave house of Willemstad" are note in black as they belong to a dark tragic past.
As a contrast, you have succeeded very detailed pictures in bright colors . . . This also applies to landscape photography..
Again, your black and white portraits are very expressive..
Now some comments on your selected images :
02: I like it very well, would have retouched the noise factor on the right blue edge. 04: My first thought: Oh my god, where did I just parked my bike?!? 05: This picture would be interesting in color. Brightening the faces of the people would improve the picture even more. 07: .well balanced grays, a pity that the ear is not quite in the picture. 09: great portrait, a little bit to much in the middle placed. The dark parts in the upper screen area are here not at all disruptive. 10: strongly in the foreground, discreetly in the background, a nice combination. Here, too, the picture could gain, if the underexposed parts were slightly corrected 16: Beautifully seen and well brought into the picture. Light / shadow effects and color are also very successful. 17: Interesting picture, unfortunately, a little too underexposed.
Thank you Martin for your varied and entertaining pictures.
Kind regards
Erwin

Hello Martin,Ii am not going to comment all the photo's. What I very like in your photo's is the little things you make visible and the good contrast's in colours and subject's. I am not so fond of the HDR versions but that is my opinion. To be short, you have a nice and divers portfoilo, and it nice to look at them.

Hi Martin,
It took some time to look all you pictures, but it was worth it! Your portofolio is various, interesting and impressive! You've an artistique eye for use of lines in compositions, contrast in colours and interesting original details! And also humour in some of them. I don't have any critics, I just like all the variety in your subjects. Because you don't choose any animals in your selection: I love this one because of the colours and the love between them! Also this one I missed : great lines and beautiful blue colours! Best Regards Dieneke

Hello Martin Here we go 1 and 2, I love this artistic framing, I believe it is not cropping, nice colors, textures and subjects, I like when simple objects are captured like this, my only suggestion is that in no. 2 crop a little bit to de right to the end of the shadow. 3. Nice contrast of colors and textures well composed a pity that the flag on the ship is cropped, but in general very nice 4. A bicycle convention?, to many, well cropped and well done in b&w 5. Excellent combination of a good scene and landscape, too bad that the light on the background is too high and the boat on the right is cropped, too much contrast on people faces, but we are amateurs not pros, so, in my opinion is wonderful 6. no words, a compo lesson, beautiful reflections 7. Good double portrait, that use of dof gibes character to the photo 8. Lilliput’s tournament of tennis? 9. Classical and beautiful scene, again, just crop a little bit from the left to the right in order to eliminate the left window, distracts 10. Wonderful view 11. Again, a compo lesson, so sad that in some countries people do that to the fields and to the atmosphere, good documentary shot. 12. Good use of guiding lines, excellent contrast of colors, light and shadows, very sharp, well done 13. Agree with brigitte, the other photo is way better, this one is so common 14. Excellent portrait, good expression 15. Well seen, perfect contrast ands just in the right moment 16. Simple objects in a good shot, I like when light is an actor. 17. Perfect compo and the guy looking back gibes life to the shot 18. Not my kind of photo but excellent symmetry 19 and 20 good b&w, well framed, nice perspective, and a compo lesson
As you can see, I do play more attention to the theme, composition and subjects than to the technicalities, maybe because they are my weakens, in general your portfolios is one of my favorites, best regards, Hector
