IF YOU WANT TO TAKE PART IN THE WORKSHOP PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE RULES BELOW:

1. Join the workgroup in this link: http://www.woophy.com/forum/12_4440_0.html . The of members list will be open all the time (to get in and to get out).

2. Each member of the workgroup agrees in being a critic for other members (not necessarily all them) and being criticized by the rest of members (not necessarily all them).

3. The main idea is to make a critic of a whole work from a photographer and not only of a picture. It’s aviced to browse to the whole collection of the photographer under critics (but it’s not obligatory, specially considering that there are some very large portafolios).

4. Nevertheless, a sample around 20 pictures selected by the photographer will be posted in the appropriate forum thread in order to highlight which pictures the photographer considers as the best examples of his/her photographic work. The critics will take specially these pictures into account, but all the collection can be browsed and used for the critic’s work.

5. All opinions must be accepted by all members, like it or not. The only limits for the critics is to be sincere, to be polite and to be constructive. This is supposed to be a workshop to learn... if you want flattery just have a look at the normal comments in your pictures.

6. All aspects of photography would be under critics: quality, quantity, originality, subject, composition, light, colour, white balance, edition, etc... But this doesn't mean that you must criticize all these things. Concerning the critics, you will find a very good summary in Miguel's blog here: ".Elements of Analysis

7. This workgroup doesn't intend to be an "exclusive club for experienced photographers". All members are wellcome, with all photographic levels... (If you don't know about white balance, depth of field, ISO, etc... just tell us "I like your collection or I don't like it at all and try to explain why with your own words...)

8. The strategy "you scratch my back and I scratch yours" is not accepted in such a workgroup... Let's be serious...

Now some ideas about the way to carry this out:

1st. Join the group in the forum linked before.

2nd. You will be in a queue and you will have to wait to your turn to post your own gallery in a new forum topic. There will be 4 members showing their collections at the same time for one week.

3rd. When it's your turn post a forum topic with the title: "CRITICS WORKSHOP: Member’s nickname gallery". In this topic you will cut and paste these rules and those written above and post around 20 pictures selected from your own collection. It would be nice also if you could write few words about your photographic work: what are you interested in, what do you want to transmit with your pictures, for how long you are a photographer... and whatever you think it’s important to consider for a critic.

I make pictures for one and a half year and I began with a small Sony Cybershot DSC-T9.

Quickly I felt the need to progress and bought a bridge and then a reflex.

I’m a landscape photographer, but I also like to do portraits.

The principal subject of my pics is the watter.

The evolution of Paulo as making photos and editing them is very great. He have a special modesty too, that I underline... He loves to learn and increase his skills, what is very good in a photographer.
The evolution can be seen in his images, all appealing our senses. People like his photos, in general (when he posts a photo, quickly it cones to the first page...), because they understand them, they are simple and beautiful at same time, sensitive, colourful, bright, taken from good angles, vivid in editions. Sometimes a bit vivid, in my humble opinion... But this is his style. Perhaps and sometimes too he will wish to show the world by another look of real or another reallity. He as the real eye for being photographer - this is another reallity.

PBX, hi!

A few short first impressions on your photos!
as always..... All imo

1. A nice Woophy photo. Not very sharp or colorful, but pleasant to watch

2. Same as #1.

3. Very good!Exciting color/light treatment and it has a nice story

4. The first thing that strikes me is the good light. No details are lost, but I do wish the boat did not cover as much as it does. A little less boat, and more from the harbor would probably look nice.

5. Nice harbor scene. Not easy to get more light in the evening, and I guess the boat is much more visible at daytime

6. Nice saturated colors and a nice scene. Looks good!

7. Nice scene, but not very sharp.

8. Another nice night scene and it looks warm and nice! We have to travel thousands of kilometers to find palms

9. nice enough, but maybe it could be done more interesting? Lower angle perhaps, maybe a slow shutter and a sunset with water crashing onto the beach?... Just suggestions

10. this looks like another version of the photo that was rated the best among all of Woophy. I was not one of them! This on the other hand looks very good even if the sharpening is a little over done.

11. As #1

12. A strange mix of drops of color. Not my taste and the "halo" at the left in the photo does not please my eyes. Not one of the better ones imo.

13. This one got a 4-rating when first commented. I still think it deserves that 4. 4 Is actually very good, but there is too much dark and uninteresting space to the left and imo it would benefit from from a crop.

14. Nice documentation and light. Nothing special, but nice to watch.

15. Nice perspective, but very soft.

16. This photo gives the impression of a beautiful day at the country side. Very nice shown

17. Abstract is not really my cup of tea. Let the rest of the Woophians comment this photo

18. Lovely portrait, but sadly it is also very soft

19. Sorry, but I'm not a fan of filters.

20. Same as #19. Why did you choose filters for the last two photos? I'd love to see them as they was shot to begin with

Summary: Big possibilities, but some of the photos are not very sharp. It may be a matter of taste, but I think they would look a lot better if the sharpness was better.

Regards
Vidar

Hi Paulo,
Having met you personally I know you have at least two passions if not more.... You philosophy appears in your pictures as you do not care too much about conventions. In my opinion a very sound approach as there are too many rules in our society to apply them even on a self chosen hobby as photography.
Of course I have to be a little more crirical than usual in judging your selection of pictures and I expect it will not influence our friendly relations.
I am sorry I cannot handle this in French but I am sure Cristina will help you!

1/2 show a pleasant atmosphere of relaxation - which you will also enjoy when fishing.

3. A great scene but enlarged you discover the problems of the very strong backlight

4/5 Olhao shows some very fine view, I like 5 more than 4.

6. Very beautiful evening scene with great lights

7. Less successful because of lack of light on the foreground and less sharp in general, maybe a tripod would have helped.

8. Well balanced night scene, very good!!!

9. Nice but not very challenging

10. A beautiful capture but it lacks a little contrast which makes it rather flat

11. A splendid evening scene , the halo in the sky could have been taken out by darkening the light parts (I suppose)

12. Definetely a nice scene but you seem to have added a little too much light, must have been the bad weather on the woophy day that I had to miss unfortunately

13. The composition could be improved but it is a potentially great morning scene

14. Forgive me but I hate cars in a picture, the colour is beautiful

15. A marvellous scene! Advice: Did you try a crop of the left part ?

16. Beautiful well varied landscape

17. I love this light from a glass stained window, I encountered it myself several times and I is very special.

18. Such a nice portrait that you feel pity with that girl. Only a minor point; why did you place here in the center?

19. and 20 To be hones too overdone for my taste, I prefer natural colours.

Overall Paulo I really enjoy looking at your pictures, they are not perfect but neither are we! I hope you will go on shooting those lovely morning and evening scenes! Do not overdo your editing and take care of the compositions! Success!!

Hi Paulo,

As you stated yourself your main object is water. Living were you live gives you lots of opportunities. You have some very fine harbour shots, but looking at them one after an other gives me the impression they all look a bit a like, boats, sunsets and the harbour view. I think you can make a lot more different pictures, more surprising over there.
My favorite is #18, but I agree with Jan, why in the middle.
You took some fine portraits, but I would rather see a more original version, the postprocessing is to much for me also.
Paulo keep on shooting, the pictures are getting better and better, but before uploading keep a critical eye on the compositions and the sharpness, these can be the final touch on your pictures.

Cher Paulo,

Many technical points were already discussed (and surely better than i could do) so I just give you my feelings .
from your selection, i like particularly your
n°3 for its compo telling a story,
n°13 for the serenity,
n°17 for its atmosphere (this one is my great favourite);
i'll say no more because i think i already commented them

i like less your
n°19&20 : i don't like very much the portraits you have chosen;
as others, i feel them too much edited ; i like more your for example, that respect more the reality, although you made an editing, but that works on a different idea (and i like it!) and not on the main subject.

about your landscapes,
n°10: sorry, I can't look at it without thinking of Luis 'pic so i'm not objective ..
and then, a question : what happened in your port-folio? where are your city shots of Faro (and for example, one you uploaded there just over a year and that was often my desktop picture ..)?

out of your selection, i particularly like

your , , , and

as you understand perfectly french, if something isn't clear in this letter, feel free to tell me and i'll say it in french (maybe it's easier for both of us )
amitiés,
brigitte

Olá Paulo!

I think one of the best things in your pictures is that they are very sensitives, they transmit a very peaceful feeling. It seems that in each picture you take your time, prepare all settings and then you choose the right pov to say us what this place is saying to you at this moment (maybe a little longer phrase in english? In spanish sounds better! ). As an example, pictures as , or which it's my favorite from this selection you made.
On the other way, I must say that I don't like your last editions… In this case I think you made a great portrait, caching a great expression and with a wonderful compo that makes the perspective at right. But the edition…. too much saturated, irreal colors… I'm sorry
That doesn't means I don't like extreme editions (I'm sure I said it before somewhere in the workshop!) For example, this one: that gives a magical view from the Aveiro's canals. The only regret about this one is the the halo in the moliceiro…
Other pics I like very much in this selection are (excellent reflections and light. Just I would like more sea and less sky in this case), (excellent night shot with wonderful light and colors. The boat under the Moon reflection makes the photo) (a classical woophy's scenery ) (absolutely gorgeous shot, with this perspective and the wonderful light at the horizon), and (a very beautiful shot, wonderful compo and lights).
Um abraço!

Hello Paulo,

First i want to compliment you because your photo's are always attractively framed and presented. That's important too.
What i like in many of your pictures (in this selection and in your collection) are the good lines and diagonals. You have an eye for them.

My favourite in your selection is this one:

Beautiful.
What makes this photo (in my eyes) so much better than many of your other water-photo's is the human presence. For the same reason is like this photo (not in your selection):

I like number 14 too. But other water-photo's (4, 8 and 11 for instance) can't excite me. and maybe (as already mentioned by another member) you have chosen too many water-photo's for this selection. (Okay, forgiven; it's your passion, water...)

Some of your photo's (number 7 for instance) look nice in their thumbnail-version. but when enlarged, they appear to be unsharp. Number 3: a nice idea. But when enlarged: blur and unsharpness. And the walking couple would come out better if not in the middle of the photo.

Number 18 is a nice shot, but number 19 and 20 are too much post-processed. The last one is ugly, when enlarged. Leave it; you don't need it.

There is a photo of yours i like very much. Not because of it's technical quality, but because of the scene, the moment caught and the composition. I'd like to see more photo's like this one on Woophy:

I also had a look at your first uploaded photo's and i must conclude: you have improved very much within a year. So go on with showing us pictures of your beautiful country!

Hello Paulo, I like your nature photo's very much because I am a nature fan too.
Most of the portrait's are good but I don't like it when they are over edited as you did by photo 19 1nd 20.
The photo of the little girl, 18 is a beauty, just as the girl is.
But you have good other items too, a pitty you don't have them in this list.
Go on your own way, we will enjoy them.

Hi Paulo,

It was a great pleasure to watch all your pictures.I can imagine that's tempting to take so much waterscene pictures, if you live there! Beautiful place! Besides your waterscenes, I think your other pictures are also full of a beautiful "feel good" atmosphere. The pictures of old houses, the landscapes and portraits. Although sometimes it's tecnical not perfect, the composition to tight, I don't mind because of the great atmosphere!
The next pictures I missed in your choise:
the old lady with "happy" lights in her eyes, I love her!
and
because of the beautiful landscape and good composition.
Hope to see more of your work...
Best Regards Dieneke
