IF YOU WANT TO TAKE PART IN THE WORKSHOP PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE RULES BELOW:
1. Join the workgroup in this link: http://www.woophy.com/forum/12_4440_0.html . The of members list will be open all the time (to get in and to get out).
2. Each member of the workgroup agrees in being a critic for other members (not necessarily all them) and being criticized by the rest of members (not necessarily all them).
3. The main idea is to make a critic of a whole work from a photographer and not only of a picture. It’s aviced to browse to the whole collection of the photographer under critics (but it’s not obligatory, specially considering that there are some very large portafolios).
4. Nevertheless, a sample around 20 pictures selected by the photographer will be posted in the appropriate forum thread in order to highlight which pictures the photographer considers as the best examples of his/her photographic work. The critics will take specially these pictures into account, but all the collection can be browsed and used for the critic’s work.
5. All opinions must be accepted by all members, like it or not. The only limits for the critics is to be sincere, to be polite and to be constructive. This is supposed to be a workshop to learn... if you want flattery just have a look at the normal comments in your pictures.
6. All aspects of photography would be under critics: quality, quantity, originality, subject, composition, light, colour, white balance, edition, etc... But this doesn't mean that you must criticize all these things. Concerning the critics, you will find a very good summary in Miguel's blog here: ".Elements of Analysis
7. This workgroup doesn't intend to be an "exclusive club for experienced photographers". All members are wellcome, with all photographic levels... (If you don't know about white balance, depth of field, ISO, etc... just tell us "I like your collection or I don't like it at all and try to explain why with your own words...)
8. The strategy "you scratch my back and I scratch yours" is not accepted in such a workgroup... Let's be serious...
Now some ideas about the way to carry this out:
1st. Join the group in the forum linked before.
2nd. You will be in a queue and you will have to wait to your turn to post your own gallery in a new forum topic. There will be 4 members showing their collections at the same time for one week.
3rd. When it's your turn post a forum topic with the title: "CRITICS WORKSHOP: Member’s nickname gallery". In this topic you will cut and paste these rules and those written above and post around 20 pictures selected from your own collection. It would be nice also if you could write few words about your photographic work: what are you interested in, what do you want to transmit with your pictures, for how long you are a photographer... and whatever you think it’s important to consider for a critic.
About me:
My professional activity does not give me much time to walk around taking pictures. I am one of those who never carry a camera, unless I'm in holidays or in a weekend out. But I do like Photography and I like it more and more, especially since I became a Woophy member. By seeing other members’ work and by paying attention to the suggestions I have received, I began to realize what a good photograph should look like. Now I have a much better idea of what I like: a picture that tells a good story or a picture with a composition that stimulates my emotions. And if the picture has a good quality (technically speaking), then I am very pleased.
As to my pictures, I try to follow those guidelines, but I know that I am far from reaching those standards of quality. But I am seriously trying to work on them. Besides reading the manual of my camera, I also began reading books and visiting sites and exhibitions. Finally, I began taking photos in non automatic mode and I am trying to be more careful with the edition I make of my pictures.
Those photographs I want to show you I don’t consider them good: I would call them honest and committed experiments. I don’t think I have already reached that level that would satisfy me. Which is good.

Hi Abílio,
Let's start with the conclusions. What I really appreciate, is that you avoid taking easy shots, and that you rather seek challenges (which you meet very nicely, by the way). And I also like the large amount of b&w pics in your portfolio/selection. What could be better? Composition most probably. And now some specific comments ... My favorite in your selection: good position of the person, the lines, a certain sense of claustrophobia, ... I like this one very much too: the tilt is a very good idea. I wonder what you wanted to show: the towers? (but one is cut), the statue? (but it's too small), the flag? the red roof? Good idea, but too cropped IMO (e.g. the feet are missing); and the music holders are nearly more visible than the musicians My first idea was that I didn't like the street going down (although that may be the reality). Looking at it again, I find it less disturbing, but the girl&dog are probably too centered (more space needed on the left, and below: her feet are very close to the border). I am not a big fan of sepia, but it gives nice effect here; however, the lights are overexposed. I like the lines and the reflection (although incomplete) but again, I wonder what I have too look at: there is no obvious reading sequence in the pic. Good, but too much floor, and too symmetrical. Great idea, but the cigarette is barely visible; maybe too much sky. This is one that I don't like. I find it extremely confused; and the background should be much less visible. Good idea, but it would probably have been better if the guy had not been standing in front of one the exhibits (but I understand the difficulty, of course). I would crop the bottom (keep only one type of pavement), and make the pic less symmetrical. A unusual type of pic for you. Too much sky IMO, and an unbalanced histogram (not enough shadows). I hope that we will still be friends after you have read this , and I would like to add that there are other pics in your portfolio that I like very much, such as

Olá Abílio! É perigoso ir a essa reunião, mas .... Eu faço isso de qualquer maneira! (I wonder how that turned up in Portuguese! Feel free to let me know if the translator has insulted you )
Most of these photos are well known, and some of them not. I'll promise to give my honest comment! As always actually
Does not really hit me in the face. Imo the sky looks a little red and I'd rather see the whole roof instead of cropping just below the top.
A lot of people like this kind of pictures. I do not, but that is a matter of taste! I'll let someone else give constructive critic about it
This is the kind of photos I connect with you. People! "Living people"! I've always loved them, and one of your photos is still hanging on my wall. This photo is imo very well cropped and it has an exciting angle. Well done Still... How does it look in color? One could hope for a red brick wall, a blue sky, golden instruments and maybe some colors on the uniforms?
I've already made a couple of not-so-good remarks about this photo I love the scene, and it is obvious I'm mistaking about the light.
An okay photo. Not much more imo.
This one does not get enough attention. The light sources are overexposed, but sometimes it works in a photo. Just like this one. Seeing in small and full size reveals two different images. Good work!
Nice colorful and life like photo. Very nice for the eyes!
One thing is missing in this photo to make it perfect. Exciting lines, pov and the contrast between new and old, but seeing the peoples reflection in the water would really do wonders for this photo.
Very well caught! The woman looks like she knows the man in the photo.
Good description and light in this photo. Even if it looks good, it is not my kind of photos, and I'll leave anything constructive to the next Woophian
Okay. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, right? Sorry, but this is not one of your better ones. It is not bad, but if we could see how high up he was it would be a lot more exciting.
It takes a little guts to photograph peoples face, but we should all practice. There are too many backs in the world. This is also a little messy. Too much details imo. Not my favourite.
Absolutely stunning city view! Simple as that!
As a composition this photo does not attract me very much. Nothing is wrong with it, but my main focus is on the photo you have photographed, and unless you have shot the photo of the one armed man, then this is a nice gallery scene. Nothing that blows me away.
Macro photography is very difficult and needs a lot of practice to look good. This photo has some chromatic aberration that ruins part of the photo even if the ant is not touched, and its background is not very interesting or even nice to look at.
Great! This is one of your better photos. You're experimenting with angles and the compo is different and imo excellent!
This photo brings a big smile to my face!
Shooting somebody else's art should be done with a twist, and you have succeeded very well with this Great pov, contrast and i must be sucker for daring angles!
Another excellent photo. I've already commented this photo, and has not changed my mind
It is a very nice blue sky, but the same sky is found around our city also. What we do not have is the kind of buildings. I'd like to see much more of them.
Summary. You're great with city-/street life even if I'd like to see more faces, and do not be afraid to shoot in color. A great color photo would probably look amazing in b/w

Hello Abílio,
To begin with my favourite from your selection:
You write: ‘My professional activity does not give me much time to walk around taking pictures. I am one of those who never carry a camera, unless I'm in holidays or in a weekend out.’ But sometimes one doesn’t have to walk around much to catch a special moment, to make an unforgettable photo. I bet there are such moments every day in your life. So why not buy I tiny camera you can always carry with you?
Two others; one from you selection:
And one from your collection:
I like the special framing that make both look like stills from a documentary film. I’d like to see more of this kind of stuff.
I most like your b&w photo’s: the above mentioned, but also number 8 (Torre de Belém), Manhattan (13), under Mozart’s protection (16) and Lamppost (17):
And your Calatrava/Lisbon-photo:
Pleasant surprises in full colour are:
Most of the above mentioned photo’s I have commented before.
Sometimes you leave to less space above or below; Ortho and Cloudbuster have given examples. May the 8th Square (number 4) offers a very nice view with good lines and movement, but in the right corner above there is lacking space.
Number 1 is not good. The cropped tower, a dull composition. The smoker on the roof (11) is too far away. Good subject, uninteresting photo.
The wondering man (19): a lot of people love this photo. I don’t. Is the background too light? Or is it a question of taste? I love humour as in the Man with the Borrowed Arm (number 14). Well seen and caught! But I don’t like the compo so much. Give it a crop?
Number 7 (Cable Cars) cannot enchant me; Waldorf Astoria is nice, but not more than that. Beer for Everyone (2) is a nice experiment; you must always try out things. And now you have tried out this one. Enough, in my eyes.
Lisbon City Scape (12) shows too much of the lady’s back. I have commented already on number 9 (Exposition); a good story telling photo and the other version you’ve send me is so much better.
Snacking on cherry (15) is not good. And number 18 (another exposition): let me think about that one some longer.
Resumed: beautiful b&w and in general I like your street-photography. Some surprising pics in full colour too. And go on, Abílio! I’m curious for what will come.

Lines! Straight, parallel, converging, twisted, angled, distorted, winding, of all kinds... Lines are the stuff your pics are made of. This is rather obvious watching most of your photos (4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 13, 18 or many others, like ), but can be said as well in other cases, where lines are not so easily recognizable, yet are the essential ingredient of your recipe. For instance in pic. n.19, where the man's arms are angled exactly like the cranes in the BG; or n.9, where the walls create a sort of (x,y,z) axis. And should I talk about your New York City views? Those buildings that create pure graphic (so that the sky - where lines are usually absent - can even be erased from the picture... ). But lines are not a mere element of the composition. They have, it seems, a deeper meaning in your pictures. In your streetscenes, they make the image unreal, and much more eye-catching. Again, this is obvious sometimes (the lady walking a dog woud not be a great picture without the graffited line), but it is always a nice exercise to find the importance of lines in other cases: picture no.4, for instance, would be very boring without those lines on the street floor. Or this one: : what have we got here, but some parked cars and lots of lines? Being your pictures made essentialy with lines, no wonder that your present collection is mainly in b&w (or based on subdued colours - like n.892565 - or even monochrome, like no.10 in your selection) . Of course, you are not always a slave to lines, and it is a pleasure to see that, with colour, you have a totally different approach: no more a composition of lines, but a composition of tones: from the Alfama quarter to the ant with the cherry, the image seems to be built on the contrast of differently coloured areas. My advice is that you should keep on this road, that can lead you to a really personal style: graphism in b&w, pictorial values in colour. We are looking forward to seeing more.

02 I am curious about the original
03 cropped too much I think, good choice for b&w, I `ll see more of the musicplayers
04 I like the square, the lines, the sky but the buildings are strange have no depth, looks they have only a facade
05 like this one very much, the pose of the lady..great and good choice for b&w
06 the light parts over-exposed but it gives a very special winters atmosphere
07 I think , I should cropp at the right and left so you get more height in the photo
08 nice point of vieuw, like the lines, good b&w
09 strong point of vieuw, great choice again for b&w
10 my fav. strong in details, lines and compo!
11 missing the effect standing on a roof
12 terrace in the middle of a city, a busy photo, like the shadow lines but I must say I`m glad it is not my daily vieuw
13 at first I thought..tilted...not good..but after seeiing 2, 3 times enlarged I must say.. very good vieuw!
14 I know it is not always possible to sett the persons on the right place, but nice
15 for me not a very good macro
16 like it, fun, humor, good choice b&w
17 Wooouw, cars....with eyes, looking trough the eyes of my grandchildren...and than I must say: I see it also! Strong pict.
18 not my pict.
19 on a special way an emotional photo, sorry I cannot explane why, perhaps the bearing of this older man, I like it
20 soft coloured, perhaps to much sky and sea, but a very good vieuw

I don't know how to transport yours pics to my comment. May be next tuesday Miguel will teach me. For now, nº 5 is the best one, no doubts! you caught the dynamic of the awful graffitti with lady dog's movement! you feel both movement and stop. nºs 6, 7, 11 are not that good. nº17, splendid funny compo, as mozart's umbrella... nº18, a clever play with space. nº19, apocaliptic (?), the most impressive one, although it could be a little darker, no? I love very much your work!

Hi Abílio,
Having been very busy this week after returning with 2.500 pics from my Mediterranean cruise I read the various earlier comments on your portfolio selection.
As I agree with the general line of these comments I will not go through your selection in detail. What is certain to me is that you have a good eye for interesting photo opportunities. Your analysis of the pricewinning pics in the October Challenge - giving me far too much honour - shows you also have all knowledge to become a well respected photographer and maybe you already are! I recognize from your own description stated above many features I experienced myself when starting taking up photography a little more serious than before. Photography is quite a bit of luck but also an investment in time and energy of which you only lack the first. Please beware of focusing too much on pretentious creativity. For instance not every B&W shot is a must, more frequently it is used for situations where light differences make a decent colour version impossible. Creativity often comes only after years of hard work and study !
I am sure your road to even more success in photography is paved with obstacles but eventually your qualities will prevail!
My favourites from your portfolio are:

Olá Abílio,
I'm a little late commenting your pictures, but still in time! To start I'm very surprised for your comment that says you don't consider your selection as good pictures… I'm surprised because some of them are in my favorites section because I think they are simply excellent, as and specially this one . It's true that other pictures you selected as (strange crop…), (just a nice scene…), (nice idea for the compo, but maybe there's too much sky) are not excellent, but I think they are not a good example of your work. One of the subjects that you catch better I think it's people, so you use to catch it making a very good composition playing with the lines, as in these cases , , , and this one don't selected on this threat, but that I love. Other things I like very much in your pictures are the wise eye you have for the b&w, your try to experiment, as in this case where the light seems smiling for your shot, and where you saw very wisely the choice to make a b&w with a drop of color. Also are remarkable your street shots and your city views, like this one and (wonderful playing with the lines, more emphasized through the b&w edition, I just would prefer a different crop showing the reflections) I really don't know what to suggest you… Maybe you can try more portraits, that I can't find on your portfolio. Um abraço!

Hello, Abilio,
to sumarize my opinion about your work, I would say I like the boldness in the shooting and, in contrast with this bold, the well licked side of editing, two features that could be opposed but are in fact complementary in almost all your pics ( Dr Abilio and Mr ? ) an exception that proves the rule : your n° 18 , it has the audaciousness... but I don't like it (don't ask me to explain why: i don't know!) n°1 : i don't understand ; if you have chosen it, there's obviously a reason but which one? n°2 : the editing is appealing and, as n°3, it has a sentimental value, the triptych of your come back with "chairs for everyone" n°4 a remarkable effect, due to a "wild" angle: the buildings seems to be part of a backdrop , being in only 1D; n°6 : daring, always, but this time in the overexposed lights, which increases the "glamour " of the shot n°7: such a fair in a scene that could be banal to die ! n°8: as many of us, I wonder why were guillotined all the characters?! in the other hand, a superb compo n°9: i 'm sorry to disagree with Bluesbuster a) this guy wasn't cheerfull before being a soldier, b) not all the woomen like men in uniform but I agree 100% : this compo stands as a rock ! n°10: how did you managed to make the man stand just on the line referring to the years of his birth? a special shot! n°11: there, you didn't get it; the idea was great but, imo, the realisation is missed n°12: really too busy for me ; i can't put my eyes in any place of the scene... n°13: splendid "spiked"urban shot; perfect in B&W and yes, the tilt effect rocks on it n°14: why? but why many of the others don't like it? for me, it's a great, great shot, a lucky one as the one-handed bandit who could be totally armless! this visitor is, imo, almost at the best place he could be, as his own arm is unvisible, he seems to get the thin arm of the other pic ( as if he was poliomyelites ,while it is in perfect health) n°15: hum.... not the sherry on the cake ! n°16: i already told you this man was a great character but i forgot to say that the compo is very good, with a good space use by the diagonal (hé, I focused more on this kind of uniform ) n°17: a classical, isn't ? but ...a classic whose charm still works n°19: a shot I just discover; very dynamic although the man is old ; as pet owners often resemble their animal, he looks like the cranes in the background ! and the grey tones/ dark foreground is quite allegorical to my eyes n°20: a beautiful and clean view with too much sky, sure, but what would happen with less sky? it would become a good postcard but anyway, just a postcard . So, keep "too much sky" in it
ha,ha, you already thought I didn't know how numbers are following ! lost! i saved your for the end because it can't be a number ! it's just my favourite friendly, brigitte and what about this picture! : a strange and clever one ! but I will not give you the opportunity to psychoanalyze adding any comment

Hi Abilio, as we say in Holland, better late then never. Finaly i found the time to comment on your pictures.
#1. Like others, I don't understand this choice, I don't like this shot #2. An experiment? A nice effect, but not my cup of tea, still, why not play sometimes. #3. A nice b&w picture, but for me the people are to much hidden, the standards to prominent. #4. I like this picture, just a clear streetshot with fne natural colors taken from a good angle. #5. For a picture like this you have to react fast, it's one of those moments. Who cares about a small tilt in a case like this. The result is great and fortunately you used b&w. #6. A very fine shot of this old hotel. The sepia creates a fifties look wich suits the hotel and picture. I only like the use of sepia in cases like this, old cityscenes. #7. This one doesn't do anything for me. #8. Maybe some more contrast. A nice b&w but not that interesting for me. #9. A nice shot of this part of the museum, I like the space you created. Again, b&w is the best choice here. #10: I love this one, the colors, lines figures they create an almost 3D effect. #11. I know the person is a bit high, but still I like the dimension created here, it suits the message. I would prefer to rid of the small dark roofpart at the left. #12. A far to buisy shot for me, there is too much here. #13. Marvelous view, great composition by using this tilt. The b&w...................... #14. I don't like this composition, the space on the left, the position of the right man. Could have been done better I Think. #15. Nice picture but not for me. From the last pictures I like #19 best, a very touching scene and for me good soft light in the background. I wonder if a little less contrast and some more shadow, would work here.
As others already showed you've lots of fine other pictures in your portfolio. And like others I like your b&w shots a lot. You have a fine eye for situations you come across. Experimenting with croppings and compositions do make for better pictures, and this goes for all of us, we keep learning, by trying, by looking at others and by receiving honest comments.

Hi Abilio, Sorry, I’m very late now with this workshop and I will try to catch up.
First I noticed that you have a strong sense for analysis and criticism, and you are probably a "perfectionist" something that I can feel also in your photos. They are usually not “easy shots”. You seem globally attracted by original situations and compositions, playing also with lines, lights and contrasts (B&W).
In this selection, here are the ones that touch me most especially. the vertical and ground lines structures this simple and living scene
great picture, one of my Fav. The compo is excellent, I love the graphiti evoking the dog's path. The position of the lady and her attitude are excellent. A vivid and also funny picture.
Beautiful light associated with sepia for an evocation of past and luxury. It would have been even better with the car more visible and closer to people.
I like this face to face, lines and the bareness of this picture, but I'm a little embarrassed by the composition, the woman seems too centered.
interresting idea, but some confusion because the character is not enough contrasted Imo.
beautiful perspective and composition, and good use of wide-angle
very well seen, but for me the composition does not work well, it seems that a tighter framing would have been preferable
excellent POV. I like the attitude of the man and the look of Mozart ... I would have try to remove the part of the right character that I find annoying.
An amazing picture, full of humor, with a good light and an interesting atmosphere.
I love the composition , crossing lines and colors also.

Hi Abìlio,
In your portofolio I like how you play with lines in the compositions you make, they make them interesting to see. Also your way of using a different angle and using the light makes it original and a joy to watch.Sometimes the subject is not shown careful enough, like the top of the tower. But you know that already... I also like the humour in some of your pictures.Like this one Hope that in the future you take more time with your camera! Best Regards Dieneke

Taken as a whole, there is an anarchic quality about most of the photographs selected her.
Convention says that any picture should have a lead-in to the main focus of the picture to guide the eye, but many of these pictures defy that convention and provide a multitude of lead-in lines (07 and 08 for example) which causes the eye to restlessly roam around the picture providing multiple views whenever the eye stops. I think its terrific; each time I look at them I see something different, something I either missed the first time or failed to appreciate the way the isolated composition exists within the whole.
I feel very envious of anyone who can 'See', capture and present such ordinary views in such an extraordinary manner.
A great portfolio, Abilio.
