IF YOU WANT TO TAKE PART IN THE WORKSHOP PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE RULES BELOW:

1. Join the workgroup in this LINK. The members list will be open all the time (to get in and to get out).

2. Each member of the workgroup agrees in being a critic for other members (not necessarily all them) and being criticized by the rest of members (not necessarily all them).

3. The main idea is to make a critic of a whole work from a photographer and not only of a picture. It’s advised to browse to the whole collection of the photographer under critics (but it’s not obligatory, specially considering that there are some very large portfolios).

4. Nevertheless, a sample around 20 pictures selected by the photographer will be posted in the appropriate forum thread in order to highlight which pictures the photographer considers as the best examples of his/her photographic work. The critics will take specially these pictures into account, but all the collection can be browsed and used for the critic’s work.

5. All opinions must be accepted by all members, like it or not. The only limits for the critics is to be sincere, to be polite and to be constructive. This is supposed to be a workshop to learn... if you want flattery just have a look at the normal comments in your pictures.

6. All aspects of photography would be under critics: quality, quantity, originality, subject, composition, light, colour, white balance, edition, etc... But this doesn't mean that you must criticize all these things. Concerning the critics, you will find a very good summary in Miguel's blog here: Elements of Analysis

7. This workgroup doesn't intend to be an "exclusive club for experienced photographers". All members are welcome, with all photographic levels... (If you don't know about white balance, depth of field, ISO, etc... just tell us "I like your collection or I don't like it at all and try to explain why with your own words...)

8. The strategy "you scratch my back and I scratch yours" is not accepted in such a workgroup... Let's be serious...

Now some ideas about the way to carry this out:

1st. Join the group in the forum linked before.

2nd. You will be in a queue and you will have to wait to your turn to post your own gallery in a new forum topic. There will be 4 members showing their collections at the same time for one week.

3rd. When it's your turn post a forum topic with the title: "CRITICS WORKSHOP: Member’s nickname gallery". In this topic you will cut and paste these rules and those written above and post around 20 pictures selected from your own collection. It would be nice also if you could write few words about your photographic work: what are you interested in, what do you want to transmit with your pictures, for how long you are a photographer... and whatever you think it’s important to consider for a critic.

• Just a few words about me

I travel for many years, almost always on my own. Travelling by foot is for me, when possible, the best way to discover a place and meet people.

Photography came almost naturally along these trips through the need to keep a memory and "freeze" certain moments. It's also for me a way of having a special look on the world. So I am a self-taught amateur.

And if I were a good photographer, I would like to show the soul of things and people, through the magic of the instant... It's somehow my quest.

I'd like to conclude by sharing a few sentences from great photographers who "talk" to me:

"To take pictures is to speak of the world" - Raymond Depardon. Have a look here

"If your photographs are not good enough, you're not close enough" - Robert Cappa

"To take a photograph is to align the head, the eyes and the heart. It's a way of life" - Henri Cartier-Bresson

Thanks a lot for the time you'll spend in this visit and for your very precious feedback.

Let's go ...

I like very much your pictures and, apart from those that I already knew (such as 4.1, 4.3, 4.7), I appreciate those with atmosphere: 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2.
Those that I like less are 1.1, 3.3 and 4.5 (which I find rather surprising: many of your pics are very spontaneous, and this one is just the opposite).

Some critiques/suggestions:
4.4: I find the composition a bit strange, with only half the man
4.8: I like that you shot it at the level of the kids, but I feel that there is something missing (but I don't know what)
4.9: maybe a bit less centered
4.10: I love the portrait, but is a bit noisy (maybe it's intentional, as it could have been too 'flat' with less noise).

Hi Zeeg, I just saw your pictures for the critiques, my conclusion at first is now that the dramatic shots you fit the best.
By the people shot's I have the feeling if they are posing, maybe it's not true, just my feeling.
Photo 4.9 is if you set the man there to sit down and stay.
Photo 4.2 and 4.3 are different, the man by the fire has a real dramatic expression and the other pict is beautiful lighted and is a fine scene too.
Photo 1.4 is nice and you had great luck the snake was there
Photo 1.5 gives a great myterious feeling
Photo 1.6 like I too, the diffuse violet colours are beautiful and the light of the moon is splendid
The other photo's are nice to see, but not very special.
As I said before, your power is the dramatic scenes

Hi Zeeg, you have a splendid portfolio. Your compositions as well as the technical aspects are in general of a very high quality. They have very few weak points and I have great reservations in making critical remarks but I will try.
1.1., 1.2., 1.4. almost perfect!
1.3. the light edge around the ship indicate overlighting and the white spot.....
1.5. phantasy worlds are not my piece of cake
1.6. beautiful evening atmosphere
2.1. and 2.2. there is no real large view, so difficult to judge
3.3. and 3.4. Compositions not so strong. (BTW the nrs must be 2.3. and 2.4.! )
4.1. - 4.9. All great scenes of human interest, fantastic! (3.1. and further)
4.10. A backlit portrait that is possibly uplighted too far?
Resuming you are one of Woophy's big stars and that star can still rise!

hello, Zeeg,
well, I must say you're one of my favourite photographers and that's because of the great quality of your work but also because of your photography subjects.
so, you will not find many help or criticize from me .
juste quelques broutilles :
first, my hardest comment (ça va s'arranger après ) about your 4.4 : i don't like it at all eventhough i presume you like it a lot ( wasn't it your previous avatar' inspiration?) ; the man looks misshapen and the contrast is too violent, imo.
my reserve about your choice in this case "sunny spell"; i had rather chosen your that,imo, is better; here, you cut the kid's legs and in the other, I can feel more the connivance between the kids; without seing them, i can ear their whispers and muffled laughters;
your "lucid innocence" is a bit grainy but you couldn't and, should I say "MUST NOT" help yourself to take and share this pic : this moment is a
privileged one !
"the link" is just a masterpiece, as well by the emotion its send back than by the compo itself (colours and light just at the right place) ; looking at it, i always wonder how you managed to take such an intimate shot with this perfect quality;
all the other portraits are great and, at once, i must disagree with Dieuwertje : i'm almost sure those images are candids ( how could a man pray as in your balinese shot while he would play a role?) except for the "fire scenes"that are maybe taken during a performance.
the "mischievous children" : in this scene, i bet you were actor in it ( maybe the missing clue?) and almost part of the image; i love the way you were surely at their feet and that's why they trust you so much ; sometimes, when i feel blue, i look at them and all is going better
that's almost all about portraits : your 1.1 could almost belong to this category ! excellent shot, great focus and almost life in it although we see only wax figures.
about your landscapes , although they are all very good, i find better my place in your indonesian shots (this is just a private feeling)
your "moods" category belongs to you and i prefer to say nothing about it except i like the whole selection, showing your various feelings in accordance to the situations.
to resumate, you will not be surprised to learn that many of your shots are already in "my favs"
friendly,
brigitte
oh! one word more : in your mood category, you forgot this hilarious shot

Zeeg, hi! I have huge respect for your photos and I'm actually a little scared before trying to criticize your work, but!...... I also believe everyone has the right to an opinion.

So... Here we go!

1.1. This is not my cup of tea, but I do feel the cropping is not really "up there". The missing nose and mouth on the fourth mannequin destroys the photo imo. Why this cropping?

1.2 Abstract. Not my cup of tea. Again..! Telling it is a nice golden color and a nice reflection is not what you deserve to hear, so I'll pass it to someone who knows more about how abstract photos should look like

1.3. It lacks the extra touch. It is a nice subject and a good setting, but it does not hit me in the face as it probably could. Maybe it is the burned out sun or maybe it is the color. It is not very colorful. Actually, it might look a lot better in B/W with strong contrast. I just sent a mail to another great Woophy member about criticism on one of my own photos, and even if your photo is a lot better it has to do with some of the same issues.
-Sorry, Mario for bringing this up again
The eye automatically moves from the left to the right (Or so I've been taught) and the first thing from left in this photo is the big white spot. It draws away too much attention. In addition, white itself draws attention and should be used with caution. The most interesting part of this photo imo is the boat, but it gets run over by bright white sun and crisp clear and bright rocks.

1.4. I love snakes, but it will not stop me from being critical if needed Warning: this is all nitpicking and a little "He's-not-really-serious" comes in hand. A waterproof camera would give possibilities for a better angle, but you're forgiven I do not know your camera but I suspect it is a compact camera and that limits the use of filters. Still it is only nitpicking, but I feel you're serious about photography. A "CPL" Circulating polarized filter would remove the bright light on the leaves and bring back the true colors.

1.5 Stunning light, compo and color choice! If I remember correct this has a very well deserved place on 1X!

1.6 A very calm and eye pleasing photo. I felt it looked a little pale so I dragged it into Photoshop to adjust some levels. Ended up with 23 - 1 - 187 (Ctrl+L). It is a matter of taste of course, but I think it looks even better.

2.1 A very nice setting, but a little too much black for my part.

2.2. A typical "very nice". Nice photo, but nothing really special and I am not sure what could make it better. A different and more interesting foreground may be better.

3.3. I've made a photo almost identical to this one, and so has 145856 other users Maybe because it is still a very nice motif?

3.4 Another "very nice" picture. It is very nice, but maybe it could be even better if there was something in the foreground or it was centered to appear as a mirror.

4.1 Good color and scene, but a closer crop and maybe even reduce hight to the boys eye hight may improve.

4.2 Looks very good. A little high ISO, but in this photo it is nothing to care about. Very well caught!

4.3 Excellent photo! It deserves it's place on 1X

4.4 Beautifully framed portrait of a very well dressed man!

4.5 Exciting angle, and my only wish would be to turn the bird around, but you can not have it all

4.6 A very good portrait. Nothing really special, but pleasing to my eyes.

4.7 ANOTHER 1X photo! Maybe the best of the 3 imo. The story, mood and focus is beautiful!

4.8 Sorry, but even if the kids are sweet, the photo is not very sharp and you've cut away a toe.

4.9 Good color and light, but nothing really special to me.

4.10 This is not one of your better photos imo. Too much noise and the bright white is burned out.

All imo of course
Regards
Vidar

Hello Zeeg,

Your collection on Woophy is rather small compared to most others, but it’s very varied too. Allmost all photo’s have a good technical quality and the majority has an interesting subject. It’s always a pleasure to see a Zeeg-photo passing by. Your collection makes me curious for more. For instance: I’d like to see some photo’s from your city, Lyon.
And I’d like to see more photo;s like number 730418 (the Chinese dentist); good documentary photography. I like that. My favourite from your collection.

From the selection you’ve made for this workshops, my favourites are 1.5 (The enchanted forest), 3.4 (One cold morning) and 4.7 (The link). I specially like your landscape-photo’s. My favourite in that category is 711708 (Bali rice field).

I appreciate humour in photography and on Woophy. The accidents-sign (717330) and Hot Dog (714895; already shown in this topic) are nice examples.

In stead of 1.3 I would have liked seen in your selection 760514 from the same place.

And further:

1.1: deserves/needs a crop.
1.2: irresistible, reflections like this one. Not a top-photo, but more than nice enough to show it on Woophy.
1.4: technically good; but this is not a subject that interests me very much.
1.6 and 2.1: nice ‘postcards’. Not surprising, but good.
2.2: a fascinating place on earth, but the photo is a bit a mess.
2.3 solitary trees are as irresistible as reflections of cranes. I think such a photo can gain in strength with a smaller place for the tree in the total composition and more space at the left.
4.2 and 4.3: good ethnographic photography.
4.4: I like the way of cropping. And the presentation. Classical; as you present a saint or a guru.
4.5 story-telling.
4.8 and 4.10: cute! And sometimes that's enough.

Hi Zeeg!

Last weeks I'm overwhelmed by work... This was unexpected for me and unfortunately I don't have even 10 minutes a day for woophy. I think that your collection deserves more than a 10 minutes comment, so I will try to find some time next days... Just be patient with me!

Hugs!

Hello, Zeeg:

Yours is a not a so large porfolio, so I you can read my comments to some of your pictures there.

You have some extremely good pictures like and

In a few words, I can say I appreciate your work, showing aspects of the world that are not so evident. In some pictures, I noticed some editing technical faults, and some of your captions also deserved reserves. Others would benefit with a larger large view to be fully appreciated. My oppinion, not necessarily correct.
Besides, a joyful porfolio, a pleasure to the eyes.

Hallo Zeeg,

Thanks to my inactivity over the last year I didn't know much about your portfolio. Well I do now and it was a pleasure looking at it. My quess is you choose your pictures for uploading very carefully and I must say less is more in your case.
Not all items are of my interest, but I admire the quality of your work a lot. One may differ over some cropping or other technical aspects, but for me those flaws are to minor to mention and others have allready pointed out some of them.
My favorite piures are the portraits and daily life shots. You've captured some very special moments with 4.3 and 4.7 as absolute superp pictures.

Hi Zeeg,

sorry for the delay commenting your pictures.
Your selection of pictures is really amazing. I am very impressed of your compos and light work. Also, you have a very nice eye both for nature pictures and for your people shots, and your editions are simply wonderful. I specially like the edition you made on , your choice of making a picture in b&w + a drop of color was very wise!
I also love pictures as , a very well seen reflection with a wonderful color edition, a perfect compo, a picture simply perfect technically and conceptually… I have no words to explain how I like it… and with so amazing pov that I can feel myself on the stairs!
Obviously, I also see that your portraits are superb… it seems that you can catch the soul of the people in your pictures… This one as example… a masterpiece imo
And here's the great contradiction… How I can suggest something to an unreachable photographer as you… Maybe that I'd like to see more urban photos in your portfolio. I think if you catch so well the soul of the people you also can do it with the city. As an example, this one I think is simply amazing .
Cheers! (and thanks for frengly.com )

Hi Zeeg,

even if I didn't leave many comments on your pictures yet I can assure you that I do like your portofolio.
You seem to be selective in uploading and I think that's a wise thing, the majority of your pictures succeed in drawing the viewers attention, you show us interesting places, landscapes bathing in dreamy atmosphere and your portraits reach for the soul of your models.

As for your landscapes I have one remark, some of them I like the most like and you did upload in a rather small version, well maybe you were just running out of memory space and had to take these in a lower resolution (that would be a shame), anyway, I think these would look great in a much larger version.

In 4.1 it's a pity that you cut the boys feet and like Brigitte I rather prefer
4.3 (fire meditation) is a wonderful capture of the moment and light
4.7 (the link)...beyond compare, great symbolic and perfectly framed !
1.5 (enchanted forest) a beautiful winner, spooky of romantic ? Shot from a great angle.

Good luck with your future travels
Kind regards

Zeeg,

I'm not able to do tecnical apreciations concerning pics, but I've practice and sensiblity enough for art messages. And ,of course, I've my taste and my taste do not apreciate that much your "enchanted forest", which gives me no message but a common one. I wonder why it is so fantastic for many others.

On the contrary, pics like 1.3 and 1.4 join plastic effect (more 1.3) to strong message (more 1.4) - degradation and evil.

Sunny Spell and Fire Meditation are beautiful coloured ones, but they give me almost only an esthetic emotion - but this is not bad, of course...

On 4.5, the bird on top left completes romantic representation, may be turning it into reality...

4.7 is strongly touchin' - a coloured but weak world of childhood under powerful dark world of adults...

And beautiful face/expression , in b&w, on 4.10! Neverthless I can't understand what a "lucid innocence"ight be...

Kind regards!

Hi Zeeg!

The first thing that comes to my mind when thinking about your collection is that is really a pleasure to browse through it. The sensitivity shown is wonderful and the technical approach is remarkable. Second, I like very much that you entitled most of your pictures. It's not very common, unfortunately, that members put a title in their pictures and for me it's really important. The titles help the observer to connect with the author's feeling in that moment and sometimes helps also giving sense to an image apparently superficial.

Having said that, I'd like to make some remarks on some of your pictures.

I'd like to ask you if you are completely happy with this picture? I guess not... In my opinion you had here an excellent scene but with very difficult light conditions (with that low sun in backlight) I wonder if you choosed the best point of view considering this... maybe you couldn't choose any other? Surely the light was better from the other side of the ship (stern) but I can understand that the bow looks much more impressive ... Anyway, the framing and the low point of view are excellent, but the light doesn't help to reach the impression that this kind of picture should give (imo). The bow looks really underexposed and with a lack of detail in it (which is even more "painful" considering the beautiful rusty texture of the ship, not really visible because of this light) One more anoying detail is that a slight halo is visible around the ship... maybe you edited separately the sky and the ship's hull? My advice in such conditions would be to use a fill-in flash (but maybe you only had the built-in flash of the camera and was not enough for this big ship...) Another possibility would be to shot few pictures in a braketing and then use the software to mix them in order to have a good exposition both in the sky and in the ship... (Obviously this is very easy to say when sitting relaxed in front of my computer...) The third possibility would be to look for another point of view... but this is the worst of the three in my opinion. So summarizing: I would say that this is an "almost" excellent picture: everything is ok: framing, interesting subject, powerful point of view... except that the bow needs light... A real pity...

Excellent image, really looks like an enchanted forest, with this misty atmosphere. The wide lense (a fish eye?) helps to achieve this magical effect. Only one minor thing (let me be perfectionist ; ) ) the right-down corner looks like having a very strong vignetting... but this doesn't affect so much to the overall result. Very beautiful picture! Oh, and the man sitting is necessary for me in the picture... he completes the picture. (It was you?)

Excellent landscape, the silhouettes in foreground look just wonderful... nothing more to add... Chapeau!

I think this picture needs something more to make it really good... I don't now exactly what it is but I can tell you that doesn't catch my eye... Maybe needs some more colour saturation? I don't know... But I think that the composition is not good... I'd rather try a symmetric crop, or if you prefer asymmetry then I think that the horizon line should be in the lower half of the image and not in the top...

Beautiful image! So nice! But I think you zoomed in too much and cropped out the boy's legs... poor boy hehehe! (Just joking but I think it could be better a wider angle including the legs and some more background)

Extraordinary portrait. It could only be better if the subject was not in the middle of the image. Just a question of composition.

Again excellent scene, impressive image, but in my opinion you zoomd in too much again, the image need some more background in my opinion... the figure of the man loks compressed... needs some empty space around to "breath".

Just PERFECT! (as far as a picture can be perfect, of course)

Wow, again perfect, one of your best pictures in my opinion. The low point of view and the composition makes the scene really dynamic! The bird flying just completes the diagonal line and the picture itself. Briliant!

Great portrait! Only I have some doubts about the vignetting... maybe a little bit too strong?

A work of art... poetry... my fav. (I just don't like the thick black frame around, but this doesn't belong to the picture)

Excellent scene again but again you zoomed in a little too much (in my opinion).

An image with a lot of possibilities... The quality anyway is not so good in this one: looks a little bit grainy, noisy, and the black and white is a little bit flat... maybe needs some more contrast?

Finally I'd like to talk a bit about this picture, even if you didn't post it here. It catched my eye immediately because it's really powerful, but when I opened the large view I found out that the tree is full of halos. This is something that I found in some other of your pictures and it's really anoying... Probably this is caused because a wrong selection while editing separately different parts of the picture (am I mistaken?) I could explain you a selection technic to minimize this but unfortunately my english doesn't allow me. Anyway, If I found in the internet any tutorial about this I'll let you know, if you are interested.

That's all Zeeg! It was a big pleasure to browse your collection! I'm just afraid that maybe I focussed too much in pointing out what I think it could be done better... but after all this was the aim of this workshop... wasn't it?

A big hug Zeeg, and keep on with this good work!

Hi Zeeg,

First my most favourite picture in your portofolio:
It's about live and strenght, in my feeling.
About the ones you choose: I prefer 1.5 and 2.1 because of the atmosphere.
1.4 is a splendid close up.
4.7 is touching, gives a feeling of sadness and tenderness to me, also a favourite!
1.2 is well composed and with marvelous reflections.
1.3 I'll think it's too dark.
1.1 doesn't work for me.
4.2, 4.3, 4.6 and 4.10 I really enjoyed watching.
Overall I'll find your portofolio various, impressive and pleasant and interesting to watch!
Best Regards Dieneke
