Fellow members. In a recent Forum ( http://www.woophy.com/forum/9_3456_0.html ) - which joris has now [ rightly ] closed, the question was raised of how each member responses to pictures. My own comment was that I responded to pictures which " appealed " to me : I did not, in that Forum, amplify what I meant. I, therefore, thought it might be of interest to share that here, and - because we are all different ! - to ask other members what, in a picture, appealed to them.

Responding to any piece of “ Art “ is subjective, a delightful consequence of being human. When scrolling through pictures uploaded onto Woophy, I look to see whether I am being shown something new about the subject shown. For example, is a picture of the Eiffel Tower using an unusual POV or making creative use of DOF ? If it is just a “ standard picture postcard “ view, I tend to move on !

This “ newness “ effects me in two key ways -

a. My eye is excited. I love encountering pictures which " jump off the screen at me " ! ; and

b. My mind is engaged. Pictures which make me say : " That's interesting " !

What do other members think ?

Geoff. ( Geoffrey McElwaine )

I am sorry, but what does DOF mean? Thanks.

Thanks for bringing this up Geoffrey. For a while there I was a bit nervous that I was the person that was upsetting everyone! My portfolio was pretty thin at the time. Anyway, back to the subject. I make a point of viewing the work of folk who have been kind enough to make a comment on some of my work. I like to get a good overview of their complete portfolio and look through them pretty thoroughly. Sometimes I rate only, mostly after I have already left a comment or two, never less than 4, those images I really like but where other comments have already said it all. Otherwise I try and give people a sense of how their image has impacted on me. Hope these comments are helpful.

PS And I do a lot of exploring. It is so exciting seeing the world, all over the world, through others eyes!

Good idea Geoffrey, my interest is the same as you are saying in a and b.
Sometimes I see an pict with good potention but something wrong in it, I try to give a good advice than.
I like it to explore the map for new countries, to learn who life is there.
When I see <postcards> I am not interested, but when it show's the dayly life I like it very much. And most of all I like all kind of nature !!

When an image strikes me, I look at large and I value. Accustomed to one vote and make a comment, but for the moment I do not give advice, that's me you need the advice. As I have little time to devote to woophy lately not say much.
Greetings

I'll try anything, once, mabe twice if I like it but for me, I am looking for unusal, effort & ordinarily comphorting in any subject matter I choose to view or try to capture. But mostly a strong effort.
As I guess I thought this was a web sight for serious photgraphers to view & share honest opinions on subject matter, tips, ideas....
However, Honest is not often perceved as Friendly or Right. Most people like to hear their whistles blown, as it were. (couldn't think of a photo metaphore.)
So, it depends on what day it is & whats the weather, for me.)

How I make my way on Woophy:
I mostly start with the people who have there birthday. I think that is a way to see the work of everyone.
Then I mostly try to see the pictures of the village of the day.
Next I look if my favorite photographers have something new in their portfolio.
And if there is left time I look trough the forums or to the new pictures.
I made it my challenge to say something about the things I like in a picture. You also can learn from hearing something good.
I think rating has devaluated by now, indeed I mostly give a five. It became such a habit that I sometimes just put 5 at the end of a phrase, even when I am not on Woophy.
I am going to start from now on, giving good pictures 4 and only the very special wow-pictures 5. And the extra very special wow pictures , (the ones I would hang in my bedroom)I ad at my favorites.

Viewing through the daily catch of thumbnails I trigger on "unusual" photos in terms of colours or topic. I realize that this is a somewhat odd criteria because the present thumbnails in Woophy are cropped. However, it is the only way to digg through the enormous avalanche of snapshots that are uploaded. I also scan now and then my "favorites". Also react on comments to see the portfolio of the commenter if I don't know she/him already. Agree with Trudy about the "wow" pxs.

It would be impossible to look at every photo here, I think, and even more so to leave comments on them all. So I think everyone chooses which photos they like, and comment accordingly. Personally I like to say more than JUST "amazing" or some similar one word comment, and if I feel I have something constructive to offer, then I will say it. I have no qualms about people leaving any sort of comment, or rating what they feel. It is up to them. It has been said many times, that it is better someone looks at your photos and comments, than they are ignored.

So well done everybody!
