I recently have noticed some really good topics that have been discussed and have found the forum is beginning to get back to what its for and that is communication between the community helping each other to improve their photography further.

A great topic about manipulation was started in the contest thread which was fascinating and shows a huge diversity in our photographic community.

And i think it comes back to your camera and how you use it and how you feel using it.

So after my long winded and illegible introduction , im asking the community to tell me what camera they use, why they chose it, how comfortable do they feel with it, what they would change on it and show me one of their best photographs which was taken with that camera.

Ill start!!!

I use the Sony Cybershot H2

My wife chose it for picture quality and easy use and i fell in love with it.

It is comfortable to use and feel i cant go anywhere with out it.

Wouldn't really change anything about it other than long battery life.

And this is my favourite photo as you regular members would of realised.

So now its your turn!!!!!!!!!

I use the Nikon D80. It was actually my second choice of camera because of the price, Canon 400D being the first but the Canon camera is too smal for my hands. The only thing I would change is the weather protection, but it's very easy to use and the pictures usually looks sharp and have the right color.
My fav is probably this picture!

Before I tell what I use I make a remark......it is not the camera what makes the picture ......it is the person who's behind it........a camera just helps........

For a few days ago I've bought the Sony alpha 700, it is the successor of the Konica MInolta D7. For I photograph for many years with Minolta DSRL's it is of no use for me to change the brand.

Over the years I've bought several objectives, 50mm 1.4; 100mm(macro) 2.8; 17-35mm 2.8(32)-4.0 D; 75-300mm 4.5-5.6 , 28-80mm 4-5.6 and some filters.

Both the KM D7 and the A700 I use with a battery grip for I have slightly rough hands...the grips also have all the buttons which are on top of the camera, for standing portraits it is very handy.

You can call me a Minolta fanatic.......and I regret it that sony has taken over the name, but the Minolta factory and the people who develop it are still there.

What I missed on the KM D7 I found back in the A700......it is to short to tell about the new camera what I miss on that one...

And this is my all time favourite......analouge , early '90-s

I use a compact Canon G9.

I was very uncertain wheter buy myself a DSLR or a compact (the cost of a Nikon D40x was approx.ly the same), but finally I realized that what I really wanted was a pocketable camera to have always at hand. Let's say that I'm a bit to lazy to go around with a big camera bag (which I did, when young, with my beloved Canon FTb!!).

A compact will never be versatile like a reflex, and in some situations i miss a good viewfinder (the G9's optical viewfinder is like the one of an old Kodak Instamatic!). But as to image quality, I am really happy with my tiny terrific toy...

Jonny. Interesting topic ! As I discovered, when meeting with Vidar recently, I am too old / lazy to carry the splendid, but heavy, kit he uses ! Having used a Canon EOS 600 for many years, I was tempted to change to the 400 D, but instead my laziness ( lightweight, no need to change lens, etc. ) made decide on a Sony Cybershot H5. I find it produces good quality results in 98% of circumstances - and the other 2% are probably beyond my technical competence in any case ! I am particularly impressed by its DOF capability. One recent example -

Geoff.

Oops, gear in use? Right, then.
After 28 years of SLR use, I changed 3 years ago to DSLR and a digital compact! Anyway, if it wasn't the much easier way to get the pics ready to edit or put in paper, as well as the price of film, I'd stick to my SLRs because they were much better than the DSLR I was able to buy for the time being!
I (still) own 2 Canon F-1 old, 1 Canon F-1 N, 1 Canon T-90 (all manual focusing), 1 Canon EOS RT (the only camera ever with translucide mirror, great for no vibration and night shots at "bulb"), 1 Canon EOS 5, 2 Canon EOS 3 (I was rich, that time)) ). More than 20 Canon lenses for both systems.
Now I take my pics with the Canon EOS 20D and a digital compact with raw, the small and beautiful Leica D-Lux 3. At woophy, 20% I guess are with the Canon, 80% with the Leica.
What I would change on them?
At the Canon, its owner .... because I intend to buy the future Canon EOS 3D (substitute for the 5D) and the 40D or its future substitute. I only really dislike the missing own cleaning system! The Leica is great for a compact, no other has so many useful features, including the choice between formats: 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9! Raw, and manual metering and focusing are great, too! What to add? The hot shoe for external flash and the screw for filters.
But manual possibilities are the greatest for me, aside with raw capture!
Well, now I hope I'll win the Loto for the intended changes in gear))
[great game between Holland and France I'm watching at the same time))
Hugs to all, from Porto,
Miguel

Hi Jonny,

I use a Sony DSC H2 as well. Its my first and the only camera I have used so far. When I bought this camera I didn't knew much about camera equipment and the only reason I bought it was because of its zoom range. Its a good camera(in its class) I like it, but I wish I had an slr. The only thing i would change is the build quality.

I'll show you one pic I took with this camera. Its certainly not my best pic but an interesting one...

CD i think you got a brilliant result with the sony, to anyone out there who doesn't want to spend on a DSLR or want to upgrade on their compact then the sony cybershot series of cameras are well worth a look.

I toy with mine trying to maximise its capabilities sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but thats the best thing about the digital age it doesn't cost to take more pictures

I have used a whole camera card on one particular scene to try get the right image and after looking through 149 pictures of the same thing i found what i wanted ie the clown picture.

Oh for all H2, H5, H7 users beware of the release button it tends to break, do not take it to be repaired as it costs over 200 pounds i bought the item direct from sony an fixed myself i will put this up on the forum if anyone wants the part number and instructions on fitting it.

Anyway keep all these great responses coming

Hi all!

Very interesting topic Jony!

I own a Casio Exilim Z-50 (5 Mpixels) that was my first digital camera. It's allready quite obsolete, but works correctly as a pocket camera for recreational purposes.

But normally I use the wonderful Pentax K10D, a 10,2 Mpixel DSLR that works really well. I bought it one year ago because IMO it was the best camera for its price. Probably at the same level of Nikon D-80 or Canon EOS 40 D, but much cheaper. I'd recommend very much this camera if anyone is thinking about buying it. It has a good quality and design. Includes image stabilizer and dust remover on the CCD (even if this doesn't work with 100% of dust specks). The noise is acceptable even until 800 ISO. It's a little bit heavy but on the other side it's very solid. The worst is that the variety of lenses is not so wide as Canon or Nikon. That's why I'm thinking about buying a Canon in the future, not because I don't like the Pentax, but because I want to wider my photogear and with Pentax I'm quite limitated right now.

Regarding lens, I use a Sigma 18-200mm F3.5 - 6.3. It's a good lens, that you can use in all situations and the best is that you don't need to change the lens frecuently because the focal range is quite wide. This is a good advantage considering the problems with dust specks in DSLR cameras. The worst. some vignetting and some color artifacts occasionally.

One of my favourite pictures:

Hugs to all!

Hi jonny & everyone,
This is a very interesting thread, and I hope more people will respond to it as it shows, the
photographer's equipment choice, preferences and personal taste. For me, my photographic equipments have changed or mutated since I embraced digital photography 3 years ago but the fundamental reasons for my choice of photographic cameras are as follows:
1. pocketability....compact, ever ready and options for auto and manual settings,
2. good lenses with wide angle,
3. macro capability, where some of my cameras can closeup to 1 cm.

Here are some of my favourites (in Woophy) for the different cameras that I have used:

Casio QV 2800 UX (my first digital camera with only 2 megapixels)

Casio EX P600:

Olympus C770UZ:

Ricoh R6:

Sony Cybershot DSC F707 (my latest acquisition, a used one):

I think this progression of camera equipments does show my personal taste and preferences and with compact digital, there are limitations as compared to DSLR but there are always ways to compensate the difficiencies.

Best regards......sawsengee

I use 2 Nikon cameras a Coolpix 8800 and a Coolpix 5900. The 8800 is my workhorse. I even dropped it on Pompeii on the pavement, but it has been repaired by Nikon.

I bought it some 4 years ago and had to choose between a SLR and a fixed lense camera with large zoom and vibration stabilizer. The 8800 has 10x optical zoom and runs from 28mm to 280 mm. In that time there was a lot of discussion about dust on the sensor of SLR's, which made me choose for the 8800. It's a good camera with 2 or 3 drawbacks viz.

- very long shutter delay (quite annoying)
- not very sensitive (max 400 ASA)
- zoom button is in a not very convenient place on the body.

It's no longer sold but recently succeeded by the P80 with has even an 18x zoom and a usable 800 ASA. Sells for some 480 euros, while I paid more than 800 euros for my 8800 some 4 years ago.

I must agree with Nonkel! In the first place!
Anyway, some features of the camera must help a lot. For some reason every Magnum Pro used to take their pics with the great Leica M! Besides, sometimes we react to cameras as some do with cars: we just love that or that camera just... because "yes"
